    Decontamination

    Concept »

Decontamination is the process of removing hazardous materials from a person or object. In games, this is usually achieved by lasers, rather than water as in the real world.

    Overview

In games, decontamination is most often found in science fiction settings. The process usually involves a special decontamination chamber that can be sealed, similar to an airlock, while the interior is swept with lasers. Because this confines the player to an enclosed space for a while, it is often used to mask load times in the same way elevators are.

Some horror games also take the opportunity to make something go horribly wrong while the player is helpless in the chamber, typically involving an ambush by enemies or the gory demise of whomever is overseeing the decontamination process.
