Overview

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai (known in Japan as Dragon Ball Z) is a 2.5D fighting game developed by Dimps and published by Bandai (in Japan and Europe) and Atari (in North America and Australia) for the PlayStation 2 on December 3, 2002. Later published for the GameCube on October 28, 2003, it is the first game in the Dragon Ball Z: Budokai series of 3D fighting games (based on the Dragon Ball Z manga and anime). The game will be re-released in HD (alongside Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3) in the 2012 compilation Dragon Ball Z: Budokai HD Collection for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

The game features 23 characters (18 of which must be unlocked to play as), with a narrative that starts at the beginning of the Dragon Ball Z story (the Saiyan Saga) and ends at the end of the Cell Games Saga (with two of the unlockable characters appearing from the World Tournament Saga). The game's Story Mode also include a few "what-if" scenarios.

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai is the first game to use the American voice cast from the Funimation dub of the Dragon Ball Z anime. However, the European version only uses the original Japanese voice cast (with translated subtitles).
