The Potara Earrings (sometimes referred to as the Fusion Earrings) are earrings worn by the Supreme Kai in the anime Dragon Ball Z. When two people each wear one earring on the opposite ears, the two beings can fuse together to form a significantly powerful being, much stronger than fusion through the Fusion Dance. The catch is that the fusion has no time limit and the fused fighters are forever transformed into the new being. The final being is also equipped with the earrings on both ears.
The Elder Kai, a former Grand Kai, was transformed into a aged old Kai due to having one of his earrings being stolen and worn by a witch. After being released from the Z Sword and awakening
Gohan's hidden power, the Elder Kai showed
Goku the power of the Potara Earrings. The Supreme Kai accidentally fuses together with his assistant Kibito, forming Kibito-Kai. Goku travels back to
Earth using Instant Transmission in an effort to fuse together with Gohan to defeat
Majin Buu. However, Gohan is absorbed before the Fusion takes place. Goku hesitantly considers fusing with
Dende, or even
Hercule, but at the last minute,
Vegeta returns to Earth. Reluctant to fuse together with his rival forever, Vegeta agrees to the fusion. As Buu is about to kill them both, the two
Saiyan warriors fuse to form
Vegito.
Upon entering Buu's body, Vegito develops a barrier to protect him from being absorbed into a pod. The barrier falls, and Vegito is somehow split back into Goku and Vegeta. Vegeta then crushes the earring so the fusion can never occur again. When on the Supreme Kai's planet after Buu regresses into Kid Buu, Goku and Vegeta, in a form of Saiyan pride, destroy Kibito-Kai's earrings as well.
Illustrated by the different forms of the Fusion characters, the stronger being is usually represented during the Fusion. However, in the case of Vegito, the two Saiyans are so similar in power that the final being retains the same amount of resemblance to the original unfused characters.
