Duke Nukem Forever
Game » consists of 14 releases. Released Jun 14, 2011
After approximately fourteen years of development, the heavily infamous sequel to Duke Nukem 3D was finally released, in which the macho Duke must damper yet another alien invasion.
Real gamers remember Duke at his best.
"oh jesus on a stick yes!
Anyone old enough to remember the first two Duke Nukem games? This and Commander Keen consumed a large portion of my childhood. Duke 3 was okey...but these where AWESOME :D "
I still have the old floppys somewhere
I also remember going to the library at my middle school and playing Civilization on the library computer every day for activity period.
Now GET OFF MY LAWN! *humph*
Yeah, I played Duke 1 and 2 in my childhood, and I still play them sometimes in DOSBox today. Duke Nukem 2 is one of my favorite 2D platformers, and has some of the better adlib music out there.
"I'm old enough, but never played it and never cared. I still can't stand games like that. Thank god I stuck with gaming, they made them easier for me. "
Duke Nukem 1 and 2 were not your typical IT WILL MAKE YOU CRY AND THEN IT WILL MAKE YOUR MOTHER CRY AND THEN IT kind of 2D platformers. They're pretty easy, actually, so long as you don't play on hard.
" @Claude said:I'm sure they're fine games, but I live in 2010 now. I left that era behind me. Much like the Atari 2600 days, I don't want to go back."I'm old enough, but never played it and never cared. I still can't stand games like that. " @sodiumCyclops said:Aw shit! I knew something was wrong! So because I never played the original Duke Nukem, I'm not a real gamer? :PNope, sorry man. "
"Man, I used to play this game all the time in school. Oh the memories of slacking off.

I never played the first Duke Nukem, but I had the shareware version of Duke Nukem II when I was a kid, and I played it almost daily, it was such an awesome game, though I can't remember if I ever finished the shareware levels. I might have, and started over when I did.
Well, Duke Nukem II, Blake Stone, Monster Bash, Secret Agent, Wing Commander, Tetris (that awesome DOS port with beautiful russian scenery/propaganda images in the background) and WinRoids for Windows 3.1 pretty much defined my childhood.
Yeah remember it, and played Duke 1 and 2 a bunch. They where pretty ok games at that time. I wouldn't go back and play them now tho.
The issue I am having with Duke these days is that he was a definable product of the times and I just cant get behind the humor today. I have moved on. Even by the time Duke came to consoles I was losing interest. I think I played more of Deathtank then I did of the actual game for the Saturn.
There is no excuse to not no your gaming history kiddo, especially since I think you can grab both of these games from Steam. Real gamers know and have played the classics." @SniperXan: Hahahaha.... so any "old" gamers who played the old Duke Nukem games are "real gamers"? When did that happen? "
edit: Just checked (and fisk0 just posted) that the Duke games are not on Steam...boo

They are not on Steam. Only Commander Keen is.
The only way to get Duke Nukem I & II right now is off 3D Realms' online store .... I'll wait until it gets on Steam or GOG.
fuck yes i remember that game ! i was born in 1991 so i only got to be old enough to play it around 97-99, but FUCK. YES. i remember thinking those visuals were ultra futuristic and fancy
" My speedy fast 286 ran Duke 1 and 2 like a Motherfucker! It blew me away. Duke 2 was not as good as 1 for my money. I played the shit out of that game. But neither were as good as keen. "Yeah Keen was great. And then in 93 or was it 94 Jazz Jack Rabbit came along, and i think i actually enjoyed that more than Duke 2.
" @SniperXan: Don't really know how old you are but I can safely assume you are older than me. But since when "having to play old classics" became a criteria to be a "real gamer"? I'm sorry "old man" but that's just an excuse make yourself higher than us "young ones." You don't have to play Pong to understand that there was a time when the concept of video game was simple. And you certainly don't have to play the original NES Super Mario to appreciate the long legacy of Nintendo. You can probably talk about it more since you've actually played it. And hey, I'll listen to that. But really... if playing the old classic considers is a standard to be a "real gamer," all the Playstation 3 generations should not even be considered as gamers at all. I know you're proud of your experiences and what not but really.... do you think in order to be a "real gamer" you have to play all the old "classics"? I certainly appreciate Duke Nukem series. I think it was a great success during its generation and it had a real good humors and what not. Am I gonna play it? Probably not. Just because you have a certain sweet spots for it and it is considered as a classic, that does not mean I need to play it in order to appreciate its legacy. Video games are not like movies. They don't age well. You don't have to play the first Final Fantasy to appreciate the 13th one. You don't have to own an old black and white(or green and yellow) GameBoy to appreciate a DS. As long as you understand the concept of it and accept the fact that there was a time when upgrading a PC was necessary to run the first Quake, then you are good. I'm 25 years old. I've owned NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, numerous PC games and now I have a 360 and PS3 and yet I still have not played a bunch of games in my life because, according to you, I'm too young. Unless you are like... I don't know 50, you probably have lots of games you have not played either. So let's not use this whole "you have to play old classics to be a "real gamer"" as a standard because really... it's just silly and ridiculous. What does even "real gamer" mean, anyway? If you like games and if you enjoy them, you are a gamer. And, it is THAT simple. "
Dude, I'm only 26.
I think it's important as a gamer, a person with a real respect and passion for not just games as a form on entertainment but as an art form still maturing, to not just look at a Wiki page and think you know what these old games where about but to actually play and experience them for yourself.
No, some games have not aged well at all. Games like Half-Life make me cringe when trying to play them because I know how much better Half-Life 2 was. But the examples you gave, specifically Duke and Final Fantasy are examples of games you simply cannot find anymore. Games like the original Duke games, those side-scrolling puzzler/shooters where well realized back then and they didn't have to strive to be artistic to be taken seriously or for people to play them like most/all side strollers of today have to do. And Final Fantasy... you play the first 6...heck even the first 7 and you start to see how Square used to make great games but are now consumed with making good graphics and ho-hum games. I can still sit down and play Final Fantasy 1, or 4, or 6 ect. and still have a great time with them but the new ones I play once and forget them, newer gamers who only play Final Fantasy 8,9,10,12 ect who don't play the rest simply can't understand how good JRPGs used to be, and how far they have slidden.
A true gamer will seek out these classics to broaden their knowledge of the past and these are the people that will go on to make the great games of the future.
Without these games, the ones we are playing now would never have been.
Or, you can go back to playing MW2 like every other frat boy "gamer" in the world.
