Overview
Elf Bowling is a freeware comedic Christmas-themed behind-the-back bowling game developed and digitally released by NStorm for Windows PCs in 1999.
In Elf Bowling, players control Santa Claus as he plays a game of bowling on the North Pole, with elves as the bowling pins (as they are on strike due to overwork). The game includes some raunchy humor, such as elves that taunt the player, and some comedic violence, such as elves that become decapitated from the pin setter. Its controls are simplistic, as players press the Space Bar at the right time for accuracy.
The game's small one-file distribution was intended for players to email the game to friends and family, causing an infamous hoax that the game (along with Frogapult) was a virus in disguise. Due to its popularity, it later received seven sequels (some of which, despite the name, switch to different sports) and a 2007 CGI film adaptation (known as Elf Bowling: The Movie and Elf Bowling: The Movie - The Great North Pole Elf Strike). The game was later included in two handheld compilations (Elf Bowling 1 & 2 and Elf Bowling: Collector's Edition) and a retail compilation (Super Elf Bowling Collection).
