easiest sniper rifle to get is to go down to tenpenny tower, go up to tenpenny's balcony while mister burke isn't there, and kill that motherfucker. most merchants have ammo, but not much. The Citadel's armory merchant has ammo, but all of it is ridiculously overpriced. 2 caps for one single 10mm round? wtf

edit: no consequence for killing tenpenny

I dunno if I agree with the "meh" statement.  Using the scope, I've found the Sniper Rifle (I'm using the unique Reservist's Rifle) to be one of the most effective ways to one-shot more powerful enemies.  Yao Guai, Deathclaws, Super Mutants, even Tesla-wearing Enclave d00ds get blown apart by a well-placed sniper round.

The only qualm I have is that .308 ammo is pretty hard to come by.  I used the Hunting Rifle for most the game, though, so if you're content with that (or can find something like Lincoln's Repeater), then you'll be fine.

The Sniper Rifle is only really good at killing off random raiders or maybe yao-gui but I wouldn't bother using it on Super Mutants or anyone with power armour on.  It's best used if you aren't detected.  You can quite reliably get 2 head shots from medium range and probably 2 kills so sneak damnit.

Yeah.  Taking your time with the Sniper Rifle is essential when using it effectively.  If someone spots you, you're not going to do much damage firing from the hip.

What are people talking about w/ sniper riffles not being good?

the 2 UNIQUE named sniper riffles are the best small guns in the game.  Ammo is easier to find than .44 amo and one of the unique snipers has KNOCK DOWN.   You shoot anything, even a deathclaw, it falls down.  What is more powerful than that?  Not to mention the insane range, NOTHING CAN SHOOT YOU but you can kill ANYTHING w/ a named/unique sniper riffle.

In fact it's so over powered I went back to the Lincoln repeater because it was too easy to kill EVERYTHING without it ever firing off a shot.

The GENERIC sniper riffles do kind of suck, but so doesnt evern non unique weapon

The unique weapons are the best weapons in FO3, if you missed named weapons.. you should go get them

There are sniper rifles. I found them quite enjoyable. Works best on the initial shot though (while you are hidden.)

I enjoyed the sniper rifle a great deal, though they were hard to maintain due to limited availability.  Thing is, they worked really well as a short range weapon in situations and in VATS.  I strongly suggest having one in Yao Guai and Deathclaw infested areas, as you can squeeze off 2 or three rounds before they even know what hit em'

    Step 1. Go to minefield.

    Step 2. Kill Arkansas.
Step 3. Take his sniper rifle.

The Gauss rifle is pretty awesome for the knockdown but I prefer Reverists Sniper Rifle (I think the named sniper is something close to that)
