A slow motion explosion of gore
Fear 2 is dark, I don’t mean it is a black disturbing game, which it is, I am referring to the general lack of luminesce. The game is literally bathed in darkness, every environment is hidden in black, dimly lit by flickering blubs and fading flashlight. The atmosphere of horror and spookiness is extremely well done, a constant barrage of blurred visions, eerie ghostly aspirations and deeply disputing scenes creating a wonderfully dark hallucination.
Gunplay is very satisfying, the replica enemies are a good challenge, and they have more brains than your average video game baddie. Constantly dodging and always on the more, flanking, tossing grenades and generally providing good cannon fodder.
The Slow motion bullet time ability is very well used. It is not held back as a special tool, but is almost always available and replenishes very quickly. Its use is totally essential to the game, and simply looks cool; a gory ballet of twisting bodies, flying lead and spraying blood. Enemies are literally torn to shredded chunks of red flesh in a glorious slow-motion explosion.
Narrative attempts to expose more of the back story of the replica army and the illusive telepathic child Alma. There is nothing here that hasn’t been heard a millions times before, a secret military experiment gone wrong and the monsters that they create.
Environments are a bit dull; mostly fill the clichéd office complex and secret undergoing facility niche. The remains of the boomed city have great ash covered look but overall the environment are uninspired.
Fear 2 project origin success at everything it attempts, very satisfying extremely bloody combat, creepy horrific atmosphere, and awesome slow-motion effects. It’s nothing revolutionary but Fear 2 is a great spooky action ride.
