FEZ Review
FEZ is the long awaited, award winning, game from Phil Fish, and Polytron Corporation. In the game you'll be playing the roll of Gomez, a citizen of the village who takes on the most important task there is. Once you meet with the elder with the eye patch, that's when the real adventure begins. This game blends 2D with 3D in such a way that I couldn't put down the controller until I played all the way through it.
The graphics are done in an 8 bit style to give you that nostalgia effect, and that yearning from some of the classics. Personally I saw some Super Mario Brothers, Zelda, Castlevania, and other NES games in this game. The amazing thing about this game is that when you rotate 90 degrees its almost as if a whole new level has opened up for you. You'll be utilizing that feature a lot. There aren't any enemies, persay, but there are hazards that you have to look out for.
The music also keeps with the 8 bit theme, and brings it home, in my opinion. There are no voices in the game, which actually felt right in this game.
The controls are really easy to pick up, and feel tight. When you want response from your controls, it gives it to you. You're going to be using the trigger buttons a lot, as this is how you turn the world so that you can navigate the world to its completion.
This game has been so hyped since 2008, and then though of as vaporware for a bit, and then there was word of legal actions, but now here we are 2012, and the game is now in the marketplace, ready for all to download. I personally didn't know what to expect with this game, but after playing it for basically six hours straight and seeing the closing credits, I have to say that I enjoy every minute of it. Sure there were times of frustration when I just missed a jump, but the beautiful thing about this game is that there are no lives to worry about, and when you miss a jump, or die, you're not going to have to do huge chunks of the area over again. You're job is to collect the building blocks of the universe and by doing so opening up more of the game. You can technically finish the game with 32 completed blocks, but there is so much more out there that will keep you wanting to continue your journey. Have no fear, if you accidentally complete the game, there is a New Game + feature that will allow you to pick up right where you left off, as well as give you a little gift for continuing to play.
I really enjoyed this game, I really wish it didn't have to end. There was so much to this game, and I still wanted more. My one small issue with the game was trying to get from one area to another, there were warps, but I never really understood how to use them, so I had to back track, and then recheck the world map to make sure that I was going in the right direction. That's the other thing, the world map can be a bit tricky too, you're going to need to rotate it, and sometimes doing so will give you false information. Overall though, I found secrets in the game, was able to feel accomplished when I felt like I solved a particularly difficult piece of the game, and I'd recommend this game to anyone. This is a game that I feel could be played by all types of gamers, and once they have the controls down, they could feel confident in playing it.
Even though it did only take me 6 hours to complete this game, anyone and everyone needs to get this game, pronto. It just came out, and it is good. I just don't know what else to say. I really really really liked this game, and am tempted to hope right back in and finish this review later. That's how good this game is. So without any further stalling I have to give this game a 9.4 out of 10.
