Summary

Final Fantasy XIV is the upcoming new game in the Final Fantasy series and much like Final Fantasy XI the game will again take an online route on PS3 and Windows PC. The creators aim for a simultaneous launch on PS3 and Windows PC worldwide. This will be Square Enix's first major MMORPG release not under the PlayOnline banner, having decided to continue on using the recently introduced "Square Enix Account" system for all upcoming online releases from the company.

The game will take place in the fantasy world of Hydaelyn.  Players will begin their adventures in the region of Eorzea , which is comprised of the continent of Aldenard and its surrounding islands. The region contains several city-states, including Limsa Lominsa, Ul'dah, Gridania, and Ishgard. Limsa Lominsa is a bustling port with a strong naval tradition,  Ul'dah is a mining city located in the desert,  Gridania is found deep in an ancient forest, and Ishgard is in the high mountains.

The Armoury

The Armoury is a version of the "job system" used in previous Final Fantasy games. Rather than gaining experience and levels, however, this class system is tied to weapons. Each weapon type represents a different character class (for example, if your character picks up a sword, he becomes a Swordsman). Selecting a weapon will grant you basic abilities for the class tied to it. As you fight with that weapon and use the class abilities it grants, your skill with the weapon will increase, granting you new abilities. At any time you can change your weapon, switching classes in the process. For example, you've been carrying a staff since the start of your adventuring career and you've earned powerful skill as a black mage. Deciding to learn the way of the sword, you put your staff away and pull out a longsword. Your black magic spells vanish and, since you've never used a sword before, you're granted only basic Swordsman skills. Put the sword away and take out your staff, and all your black magic spells come back.

Races

Elezen

The Elezen are nomadic people whose race used to lay total claim over the land of Eorzea and predated all the other races on the lands of Eorzea.  Bleiving this prominence to be ordained by the gods, they came to develop an esteemed sense of honor and pride.  The Elezen are a characteristically tall, slim physiques and large ears.  Their ears are so sensitive they can discern the squeak of a field mouse from several malms out.

Lalafell

The Lalafell were originally a group of agriculturalists that used to live in the south seas.  Thanks to transmarine commerce they found their way through the trade routes of Eorzea.  Their race now is one of the most populated races in the region of Eorzea.  Lalafells are extremely agile and are able to travel long distances due to their legs.  Many of the Lalafells are also very intelligent and highly developed individuals. This race continues to be one of the friendliest races welcoming any insider.

Hyur

The Hyur came from across the sea from neighboring continents.  Three massive migratory waves gave this race the most population in the land of Eorzea.  The Hyur brought  massive amounts of technology to Eorzea and drove the cultural and advancing progress for all those that reside in Eorzea.  They also brought a very complex ethos.  The Hyur are extremely individual and this upset the Elezen greatly.  Hyur can be found mainly among the Highlanders in the mountainous areas and the Midlanders who live in the lower elevations.

Roegadyn

The Roegadyn are found in the northern areas of Eorzea.  This is where they came from when they landed on the shores of Eorzea and remain maritime people.  The race is physically built, very enormous and muscular built.  Culturall this race is has a very hugh emphasis on competition and unflinching courage.  Most Roegadyn remain seaman located in Limsa Lominsa area.  However many have adventured out into the world to become bodyguards, mercenaries and even pirates by trade.   Though some Roegadyns have moved high up into the mountains of Ul'dah known as the Hellsguard and said to have mastered the magical arts.

Miqo'te

The Miqo'te originated from hunting tribes that found Eorzea's seas turning the "Age of Endless Frost".  At that time the land was covered by ice and passage became possible, this lead to a influx in foreign funana which the descendants of the Miqo'te hunted.  The Miqo'te belong to two different groups.  Seekers of the Sun and the nocturnal Keepers of the Moon.  Both groups share a olfactory sense and powerful leg musculature which evolved from their past hunting and predation.  This race chooses to be very isolated and avoid contact with the other races even when they reside in the large populated cities.

Limsa Lominsa

Limsa Lominsa
Limsa Lominsa
Limsa Lominsa is located off the southern coast of the island of Vylbrand, under the shadow of ancient cliffs craved by the relentless Rhotano Sea.  The city is actually placed on many different islands or sea stacks. Bridge span across each island that and earned its name "The Navigator's Veil" which bard describe what they had witnessed from afar.  Llymlaen is the goddess that is said to have blessed Limsa Lominsa because she took pity on the sailors of a great armada that had to flee from battle.  The rocks destroyed their ships and with no way to get anywhere and no home to go to they settled in the islands using the vessels that they had to begin construction.  The people of Limsa Lominsa did not forget their old ways, but mearly gathered strenghth to rebuild and adventure out again.  This lead their influnce spreading throughout the seas and began rulling the 5 seas of Eorzea.  This legends formed the backbone of their society and their leader is referred to as Admiral.

The shipping industry is key to Limsa Lominsa financial success.  Knights of the Barracuda secure the safety of mariners and ensure the safety and reliability of shipping route's.  However, piracy, reaving and pillaging still runs rampant and other nations believe that the Knights of the Barracuda are actually working with local bandit pirates and make profit off unwary travelers.

Travel

Aetheryte

Aetheryte Crystal
Aetheryte Crystal
The Aetheryte is the name placed upon the large crystal shards found in the crystallized aetheric mist.  They were precisely cut and fused to arcane machinery.  These crystals are at the backbone of all everyday teleportation and are found throught the realm, mainly in the individual city-states which they are managed and operated.  These crystals are still much a mystery.  It is not known who constructed these crystals or what they were originally used for.  Even the teleportation and how it works is a mystery.  However, some come to theorize that ones sentient presence approaches the crystal the aether and the body resonates with the aether of the crystals and the body thus breaks down into simple mass which then flows through the invisible aetheric streams of the planet.  The persons soul is which actually guides the particles to the pre-determined destination and the crystal reconfigures the mist back into its original form.  This is all instantaneous and this make easy travel to the far reaches of the world.  However, one may only use the crystal so much as it when the body is broke down to the aetheric level the soul it takes a great toll on one's body.  Distance and use is the biggest factor when using the Aetheryte to travel and if one uses it too much in a sort span of time irreversible damage can take effect.

Leveling System/Character Growth

"This time, there will be no experience points or level system," said producer Hiromichi Tanaka.
FFXIV's director Nobuaki Komoto said, "People who may never have tried an online game before have the freedom to try many different things and tackle any number of quests and grow naturally from their experiences... That's our priority: players enjoying the process of character growth."
"We believe the main factor behind Final Fantasy XI's lasting appeal is the job system," said Komoto. "However, the system will become something completely different. The focus here will be on weapons. Your weapon will determine how you play. Your weapon will determine how you fight.

E3 2009 FFXIV Highlights

At the E3 2009 Square Enix Conference, when asked about how other popular MMORPG games like World of Warcraft have influenced the design of FFXIV Online, the lead developers stated that they will aim to make the game a bit more suited to a casual audience but still keep a uniqueness from other MMORPG games. To draw a more casual audience they state that the game will cater to all sorts of play styles, ranging from solo and party play right from the start of the game. Like Final Fantasy XI, XIV Online will aim to bring the high quality story and a world which "players will fall in love with".

  • Final Fantasy XIV will have similar races to FFXI.
  • FFXIV will not be taking place in Vana'diel.
  • Planning has been going on for 4-5 years and development has been underway for the past two years.
  • FFXIV is looking also for a more casual audience.
  • Battlesystem will not be disclosed at this time but will see player battles one vs many and many vs many.
  • Worldwide release is planned for PS3 and PC in English, German, French, and Japanese.  Other hardware such as Xbox 360 is still being considered for a later date.
  • The current plans are to have worldwide servers that are cross-platform and cross-region. English, Japanese, German, and French versions released at launch. We will do a beta test and look at the balance and player experience. We want to look for a good balance between region and cross-region play.
  • No Spanish version is being developed but market research will be conducted to see if it is worth investing into a Spanish localization.
  • Quality is what the developers are most interested in.
  • Keyword in development and focus is "The Growth and Development of the Character". Same high-quality story telling as in FFXI, along with high-quality graphics.  The characters will grow in a more natural way during their gameplay.
  • Looking for a wide variety of playability, that way if you have hours to spend you can do that, or if you only have 40 minutes you can still find something to do in FFXIV.
  • FFXI characters cannot be transferred to FFXIV.  The game is completely different, though users can create similar looking characters.
  • PlayOnline will not be used in FFXIV, but friends list will be transferred over.
  • The story and world they have created is what will ultimately win over people to play FFXIV.
  • The game will be pay to play however the exact pricing has not been decided at this time.
