Is it just me or is Dr. Robotnic a waaay cooler name than Dr. Eggman. Seriously. He makes Robots out of animals. That explicitly says Robotnic to me. I cant believe they call him Eggman just because his little ship looks like an egg. Post here if you think Dr. Robotnic is a much better name.
He'll always be Dr. Robotnic to me.
This topic is locked from further discussion.
From what I understand, Dr. Robotnik is a actually a sort of alter ego - a reversal of the benign Dr. Kintobor's personality as a consequence of a scientific disaster involving - you guessed it - an egg. Hence, Eggman.
You'd think I was joking, but that shit was seriously developed in the Sonic Comic lore. Lovely Dr. Kintobor + egg disaster = Dr. Robotnik.
Originally, in Japan, Dr Eggman was always Dr Eggman. But for some reason he was introduced as Dr Robotnik within the US and European games. When Sonic Adventure was released, Sonic Team tried to bring the two names together by introducing him as Dr Robotnik, but Sonic and friends would mock the doctor by calling him 'Eggman'. Then within Sonic Adventure 2 he started referring to himself as Dr Eggman, and the name has stuck since.
I don't know why people insist on calling him Dr. Eggman he's not made from eggs and I still think Dr. Robotnik is the better name for him it sounds so much more evil.
Wait, did they rename him Eggman? How could they rename Dr. Robotnik!? First those god awful Transformers and Dragonball Z Movies, now this!? They're raping my youth!

"I don't care what came first, in North America Robotnik was first, and so it shall be his name. If they started calling Mega Man...Rock Man in North America, would you just say "Hey, his name was Rock Man first, so lets just accept that""I dunno... Both those names are stupid. It's like they were like hmm...
P1: We got this character and he's awesome... Let's call him... SUPERMAN!
P2: Nah, there's some obscure North American character named that...
P3: Damn... What about Awesome Man...
P2: Um... I dunno...
P1: I got it... Let's call him Mega Man!
P2: How about Rock Man?!
P1: ... No... I think we'll stick to Mega Man...
@bkorns4: In North America, they called Mr Satan from Dragon Ball Z "Hercule" So what? You're gonna call him a demigod name Hercule, or super-awesome-demonic SATAN? But character is still idiot.
My first Sonic game was Sonic Heroes. He will ALWAYS be Eggman for me.
BY THE WAY.
Robotnik and Eggman are different characters!
PINGAS Robonik is Robotnik.
SatAM Robotnik is Robotnik.
And Canon Robotnik is Eggman!
IT'S OBVIOUS!)))

In the American Dub of DBZ, Hercule's surname is still Satan and he is referred to many times as "Mr Satan".
About as necro as a thread can be...
But I really don't care. All of the good Sonic games were the ones where the instruction manual clearly stated he was Dr. Robotnik, plus it's even canon to that puzzle game. Also, his grand evil plan involved turning animals into robots. It made sense.
@flipperdesert Crap! In the following sequence after that clip, she calls him "egg belly," and now my whole perspective is upside-down!
@fattony12000: I loved that comic, I think seeing that has made my day.
I'm the same with with Doctor Octavius from Spider Man. Doctor Octopus just sounds so lame to me. I always refer to him as Octavius.

Well, they were right. Ivo Robotnik is an awesome name.
This is hilarious. http://sonic.wikia.com/wiki/Doctor_Ovi_Kintobor
Just look at this shit.
LOOK AT IT. Look at that brown hedgehog. Look at his dirty-ass untied shoes. Look at Robotnik's Ovi's eyes!
edit: Whoa. This keeps getting better:
When Kintobor invented the friction-less Power Sneakers, Sonic was able to run faster than the speed of sound. The resultant sonic boom shattered the Gyratoscope, fused Sonic's spines and turned him from brown to his more famous blue form.
And then
he went to find some salt only to trip on a cable and slam his hand against the ROCC's control panel. The ROCC which exploded, bathing Kintobor and the egg in chaos energy, transforming the kindly scientist into the megalomaniacal Ivo Robotnik.[1]
but wait it gets better:
It was later revealed that Kintobor's accident had in fact been caused by a time-travelling Sonic, who both placed the rotten egg in the fridge and pulled up the cables causing Kintobor to trip into the machine.
What a great backstory
Eggman has always been a dumb name. It's one of those names that I'm sure seems totally fine in Japan, but reads really dumb to native English speakers. This is the sort of thing that highlights the necessary distinction between "translation" and "localization."
I have no idea why they changed Robotnik back to Eggman in the West, aside from trying to soothe hardcore Sonic fans that were angry for some reason that the "true" Japanese name wasn't being used.
Hey @rorie, I know this is a highly specific request, but could the engineers come up with something that prevents new accounts from posting in threads that are more than a year old? Because Jesus Christ, I'm so tired of fanboys from some stupid series googling their way to a 5-year-old GB forum thread about their series of choice, and then signing up for an account just to correct some stupid point made in this ancient thread.
I can all but guarantee that those users don't matter in the first place, since these sorts of users seem to sign up for an account, make their one post, then never visit the site again (or at least never post in the forums or comments ever again).
@bisonhero: This site is fragile enough that I'd hesitate to start throwing in very specific rules like that for fear that they'd just break something else. In the end it's easiest to just flag posts and note that you think they're bumping necro threads if it's really concerning.
What's wrong with bumping old threads? Would you rather them create a new thread about this problem? At least they went to the page and posted in the correct thread.
Yeah isn't the whole point of keeping old threads that they can be bumped now and again over time? Otherwise GB would just delete everything after it was X years old.
Post away.
Personally I prefer old thread bumps to new threads.
Edit: oh yeah. Original reason I came here...
I never realized they officially changed his name to Eggman. That's crazy.
Since in Sonic Adventure 2 his grandfather and... cousin? I don't care enough to look up Maria's connection to Robotnik. Anyways, since they all share the Robotnik name even in Japan, I like to think of his real name as Dr. Robotnik and Eggman is just his dumb super villain name.
In real life, if I were to call someone Robotnik, they would be down to do cool stuff. If I called someone Eggman, I would get stabbed.
And that never made sense to me as a kid, because I was like "Wait, so you call yourself Dr. Robotnik, and you HATE when Sonic calls you Eggman... but then he goes ahead and names all of his creations Egg-something. Egg Viper. Egg Carrier. Egg Drill."
Makes sense now obviously. I kinda like the Eggman nickname idea. But it works either way.
@development: So Sonic more or less made Robotnic into the villain he became? That's some Iron Man 3 "we create our own demons" shit right there.
@dixavd: Yeah I think the thing there is them showcasing the two different eras of Robotniks. Maybe they're trying to paint them as different people in some kind of cute "other dimension" package, but I doubt it's real serious canon for the future. Fuck... listen to me. I'm becoming what I hate.
I'm just going to keep on living my life according to the fact that there is only one true Dr. Robotnik and no such man known as Eggman.
...and done!
