According to gamertell you can now purchase 800 Xbox Live Point Cardsfor $9.99 from various retailers

800 Xbox Live point card
800 Xbox Live point card

Ever want to buy something on Xbox Live Arcade that costs only 800 Microsoft points but you lack a credit card to get more points directly and dreaded spending the extra dough on a 1600 Microsoft point card that’s just 800 points too many? Never fear little precise friend.

Microsoft is beginning to roll out 800 Point cards to retailers at a reasonable (depending on what you consider the value of virtual “point” to be) cost of just $9.99.

So now you have your brick-and-mortar options between a $19.99 1600 point card and a $9.99 800 Point card.

In these trying times, it’s nice to know that the big guys are watching out for my thinning wallet. Sure they are still taking my money but at least I have the option to save a little, especially if I’m just buying a stocking stuffer (hint, hint) for a bratty nephew.

Buying 2 800 point cards is cheaper than buying 1 1600 point card. My "that's not how it's supposed to work" sense is tingling.

Actually buying two of those 800 Xbox live point cards costs ya $19.98 , so the difference is merely 1 cent

That one sentence means I'm never going to read anything from this gamertell site ever again. They're just trying to sell more points. By offering more variety, the company hopes to sell more. They're not "watching out for you".

It's not really such a big deal for me, because there's usually several games that I'll buy at once, anyways.  It's actually pretty good for a gift, though.

800 point cards? Whatever, I guess that is good for the one-time buyer of XBL stuff, but I still usually buy cards by the 4000. A lot of RB songs and XBLA games to buy, sir.

You save like 2 or 3 cents.

Regardless, buying in greater quantities usually subsidizes the cost of an individual unit. But since MS points are a form of currency exchange, that never really happens. That's what I was remarking on. It always seems odd to me.

Finally, MS has let off some of the darkness around their body.  I can't beleive they actually did this, I thought they would have increased the price for the 1600 cards.

2 800 points cards in Texas:

$19.98 + tax (at 8.25 cents) = $21.62

1 1600 points card in Texas:
$19.99 + tax (at 8.25 cents) = $21.63

Yes, it does cost more...by a penny.  However, knowing all this, I would still buy 2 800 point cards rather than a 1600 point card, as in the scheme of a bigger total purchase (say a couple of games or something), that 1 penny savings can actually turn into a maximum of 5 to 6 cents.

For the average gamer, that may not be a huge difference...but where I work, I can guarantee we'll stock up on 800 points cards to save a buck or two rather than stocking up on 1600 points cards.

Weird, here it's:

2 800 points cards in Idaho:
$19.98 + tax (at $1.30) = $21.28

1 1600 points in Idaho:
$19.99 + tax (at $0.00) = $19.99

Hum.

Sounds similar to the way some DLC is on the PS Store. For example, Rock Band might release three tracks in a week for $0.99 each, but the bundle with all three is $2.99.

I'm sure if you bought them online at an online website and they ship worldwide, you could do it. Probably the only circumstance, however.

I think they're region locked.
