I used to love RTS's back in the day, Warcraft 2 and the Stronghold series being my favorites. Once they started switching to 3d and micromanaging your units, and slowing getting rid of the focus on base building they lost me. I like my RTS's simple and slow. The last time I looked at one was the Red Alert 3 demo on the PS3 but i couldn't stand to even finish the demo.
So my question, Has there been any recent (PC) games fitting what I might like? I haven't heard of anything, but I also haven't payed a whole lot of attention to the genre.
Any good recent RTS's with base building?
Uh, Red Alert 3. On the PC. Good grief, man, PS3? What are you thinking? CNC 3 has base building too.
And Warcraft 3 is still pretty great. RTS's these days have been sort of dumbing down base building, but Supreme Commander still has tons of that, if that's your cup of tea.
Yeah, RA3 was pretty awesome. I especially liked the commander's challenge in the standalone expansion.
As for base building, RA3 relies on buildings and stuff more than the other recent RTS games. Especially the Rising Sun faction. Each faction also has slightly different building rules.
Havn't tried console versions but, seriously, there hasn't been an RTS on consoles that's been good.
While you're at it, pre-order SC2.
" @Vinchenzo said:Beta it.I got the itch now though :( Downloading the Red Alert 3 demo for pc, gonna give it a real try. "" Just pre-order Starcraft II. The definition of premium base building. I love it. "

Stronghold was the one that was half city-builder, half RTS, right? If you want a couple of recent examples similar to that, I would suggest Anno 1404 or Grand Ages: Rome.
Supreme Commander 2 is what you want, game is freaking awesome and 70% of the gameplay is base building. The ai is highly adjustable with many custom settings, even ones labeled turtle if you want a nice slow match.
My co-op buddy and I have good fun setting up crazy defenses and rows of artillery then just laughing as the enemy gets pelted while we build up massive armies of giant robots.
I agree with Lazyaza. I highly recommend Supreme Commander 2. Tons of base building. Another fantastic RTS is Company of Heroes. That doesn't have much base building in it though. The main focus in that game is the combat.
As others have said, get Red alert 3 on PC. I tried playing it on 360 beforehand and passionatley hated it - i then bought it for PC and utterly love it.
" @NekuSakuraba: No, you must construct additional pylons. "WE REQUIRE MORE VESPENE GAS
On topic, though, I recently played through Dawn of War (the first one, mind you) and most of it's expansions. Every mission's path to success was the same; turtle up, build up to the population cap, swarm enemy. Great game, too.

I agree, supreme commander 2 is the first rts i've played in a while that i really like. Turtling is actually a viable strategy in this game.
I would not recommend Starcraft 2 if you want "simple and slow". Starcraft has never been either of those things.
" supcom 2 is a decent game despite what fans of the first might say. Definitely a tighter better rounded experience. "OMG... how can you even say that.. Have you even played the first Supreme Commander?
I can't even begin to start arguing about what you just said.. all i'm going to say is go and take a long look in the mirror, say out loud what you have just written. If you dont have a really shamefull look on your face of realization of just how stupid a comment this was, then just headbutt the mirror repeatadly,.
Wow. You're kind of an asshole. Seriously you need to chill the fuck out man. I agree that Supreme Commander 2 is a tighter and better rounded experience. There isn't so much micromanagement or 3 tiers of building. It's all unlocked through research.
Red Alert 3 is probably the only RTS of recent memory that followed the fomula of RTSes of old, that and the Starcraft 2 beta (if you're willing to put down 5 dollars for a pre-order at Gamestop).
I recently finally came around to getting Sins of a Solar Empire and that has some base building. But, I will tell you that game is hideously complex (though in my book in a good way).
Company of Heroes technically does have base-building, granted in most games you're only going to be building two or three.
Man I tell you, for me, no RTS has ever matched the first Total Annihilation base building. I find myself disappointed with every RTS to follow. I never played the first Star Craft (*gasp from the crowd*), so maybe I'll give part duex a shot.
