Take one step into my room and you're bombarded by the answer, i'm hardcore.
Whatever that loaded term means :P
This idea that we should have like a hierarchy of how "hardcore" we are is really fucking dumb. And the term "gamer" is really dumb. I don't call people who read books a "hardcore reader" because it's fucking stupid.
I like to consider myself a Variety Gamer if i had to pick a label. I like to experiment with new ideas in games and try to find the appeal of the broad spectrum of different games.
I play a lot of video games. Does that make me Hardcore? I don't know and I don't really care to find out.
I guess. I don't know. I play lots (& I mean lots) of games and it's my favorite hobby. Usually when I get a new game, I'll beat it in 2 sessions, depending on how long it is. If it's short, like 6 hours or so, then 1 session. But I don't play games every day. If I beat all the games I have, I won't touch my systems until I get a new game or get the urge to play something I already played. That's not to say I have no games to play right now, I actually have a huge backlog that I'm to lazy to go through right now.
I play games, but they don't define me enough to ever call myself a gamer (a term that I think is very dumb to begin with). Maybe enthusiast? I don't know.
The terms 'hardcore', 'casual', and 'gamer' are among some of the worst things to come from the Internet regarding games. They are right up there with 'epic'.
But there has to be a differentiation between someone who plays more "serious" games and someone who plays Zynga games or Angry Birds, or am I way off on this? I do agree that hardcore really sucks dick though. Will never understand why people hate gamer so much.
What the hell does that even mean? Am I "totes def hardcore" because I play Strategy RPGs and don't care about Call of Duty at this point? Obviously, anyone who is posting on these forums probably has a certain level of enthusiasm for video games that goes beyond one or two titles a year. I spend a regrettable amount of time with video games, so if that's the numeric for hardcore then I guess I am?

These definitions did not come from the internet but rather the industry them self. People did that to actually separate the potential market and so they can try to reach and categorize a certain market better. There are a lot of other stupid definitions out there as well. But core, casual and non gamer are the most common one.
I suppose. I play a lot of games, and I can even play some games at an intermediate competitive level.
I don't care for the "hardcore" label, though. I am who I am, and no label is going to change that. I'll just keep doing what I like to do.
People worry too much about their "gamer cred."

That's a Bingo.

IT has nothing to do with your skill or gamer red like archivements or your gamer score. IT is all about how much time you spend on games and how intense you do it. Also how much you buy. I am a gamer because i love to game. If I would smoke a lot I would be a smoker so I do not see anything bad in this definition.
I play a shitload of video games, and i care about them as a medium. I apperciate their artistic merits and their just dumb fun-happening qualities.
"Hardcore"? EH! if you want to call me that go ahead.
@darji: I think what he's getting at is that there's a lot of people who refer to themselves as 'Hardcore' Gamers as some kind of elitist label.
Which I'd be inclined to agree with.

for me it is not about that. For me these definitions are an indication of peoples habbit and on what they spend their money on for example. And normally it is a given fact that gamer have a bit more knowledge about games then the casual Mario kart or GTA player. You will know about upcoming games, you read previews watch videos, trailers etc. It is just an indication how much you know and how much time you spend with gaming related stuff.
I'm just a regular gamer, but not hardcore. There's other stuff I like to do besides gaming.
This.
My roommates (late 20's/early 30's) will spend 8-10 hours per day marathoning a game they've already played.
I need to take a break after 2 dota matches - like a good hour to 2 hour break and do something non-videogame related...
I guess it all depends what your definition of "hardcore" is. I've been playing games for well over 23 years now. I certainly have played a lot of games, but I was also involved in sports, and other activities. So while yes, I play a ton of games and own almost all the major systems, I still don't consider myself "hardcore". While I've spent many evenings playing games into the wee hours of the morning, I do know when to put the controller down.
I just consider myself a gamer, casual or hardcore it doesn't really matter to me. If you play games, I can probably talk to you about games. However if you are a Brogamer that only plays COD and Madden, I might make fun of you a bit.
what the hell does hardcore even mean? i work with a few guys who say ur only hardcore if uve got a top of the line pc and only play games with the best looking graphics lol. honestly i can't even think about calling myself hardcore without feeling like a douche. i invest a lot of time into games, but ull never hear me refer to myself as "hardcore" lol.
According to the tastes and attitudes of people who make up most of the games press reading audience, no.
According to everyone else who's ever met me, obviously yes.
I'm not "hardcore" or a "gamer." I just like to play video games.
But a part of me is hard right now... Don't look over here.
oh wow what is that i have never seen one of those with a top hat and a monocle. good on you
