The last two games I've completed have ended with me fighting a giant monster torso. There's of course only so much you can do with that scenario; shootin arms, head it explodes- credits. Still, it would have been funny if Apocalypse rose up and I had to kill his arm, oldskool style.
For the love of GOD can we stop with End-Game Torso Boss Fights?

Ok, three games i've beaten in a row have had torso boss fights. The others are *Spoilers I guess*
Hunted and Dungeon Siege III.
Too many of these type of boss fights in general, not only in the end of games. Just beat Batman: Arkham Asylum there was one there. The God of War and Zelda series come to mind as well. Oh, looks like I gotta hit a weak point and then he'll lean his head in and then I hit that for critical damage huh? I agree this should totally be a concept if it isn't already.
At least in Mass Effect 2 the thing had an excuse for not using it's lower body. In Ninety Nine Nights 2 you fight a goddamn huge dragon's upper torso. What the hell, why are you swinging your arms at me every 10 seconds? Just fly up here and lay down on top of me and I'd be fucked...

Hah, I DID do a second playthrough earlier this year. I think the fact that the last 3 torso fights I experienced were in such mediocre games shows that its definitely some indication that a game is probably not great (ME2 aside)- of course you dont see this indicator until its too late; too late for any of us.
Boss fights are pretty much only good in games in which you have a sword, or Metal Gear Solid.
I mean, Zelda, SotC, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Age, and the Final Fantasy series all have great boss fights, and they all have swords.
Too many bosses in games try and make things be too epic or crazy, but it's like the whole Star Wars prequel thing. Even though the fight scenes had better choreography and special effects than those in the original movie, they were nowhere near as entertaining or meaningful because you didn't care about what was happening. The fight in Mass Effect against Saren was great because you had been tracking down this guy the whole entire time, and seeing the horrible things he had done. On the other hand, the final boss battle in Mass Effect 2 was completely meaningless, as you were just introduced to this enemy, and honestly didn't care about him.
Game designers can sometimes throw the baby out with the bath water. In their effort to make something epic, they make it too different from the rest of the game.
As for Dungeon Siege 3 specifically, forget the boss, the only thing I wanted at the end of that game was an apology. There's no way a game of that shallow depth should be released for $60 in 2011.

I liked the game, but the ending was bunk. They never even fully explained who the fuck the radiant youth is. BAHHH
Best boss fight ever...I actually thought the fight with Shiva was cooler. Mano-a-mano, you know? The fight with Mr X is just a repeat of the SOR1 final boss. Don't get me wrong though, I still love the fight.
@harinosho: A good end-boss fight should challenge the player by forcing them to bring everything they've learned to the table either by introducing them to variations of encounters from earlier in the game or challenge them even more with something completely new. Again, imo a torso end-boss fight is kind of a sign that the rest of the game was probably not that great- since its a good indication that the developers are admiting that the players learned nothing- that the developer doesn't have the potential player experiences in their toolkit to make the experience richer.
Fixed.Fuck cannon enemy fodder fights.
Bosses make games worth playing. I want a fight to be one-on-one. Swatting off a legion of weaklings is just the tedium that leads to the main event.
The last fight in Dungeon Siege 3 was great. You could farm the enemies to get the max level and it wasn't a cheap fight. And on the other side is Metro 2033 where you just run down a stupid little maze thing.
Worst boss fight moment for me was in P3 when the final boss mind controlled MC, who just happened to have Titania out and it full healed itself fuuuuuuuuuu
I loved that Halo didn't feel the need to have a last boss or any other kind of silly giant monster appear that you'd have to fight and still managed to have an amazing final act.
Of course they messed it up with the sequel, but at the time I appreciated it a lot.
The two lamest boss battles, for me, in otherwise good games were like that; the ones at the end of Mech Assault 2 and Mass Effect 2.
