GotG Round 1: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots vs. Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved

War has changed. It's no longer about nations, ideologies or ethnicity. It's an endless series of proxy battles, fought by mercenaries and machines. War, and its consumption of life, has become a well-oiled machine. War has changed.

This fucking fight. So cheesy, so ridiculous, so satisfying.

Clearly this is a walk for Geometry Wars.

Geometry Wars is so, so great and it was also actually important in showing the possibility of the cheaper downloadable game, an avenue that led to some of the best games in years.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is dumb.

And also one of my favourite games this generation. I choo-choo-choose you, Metal Gear.

That is really an odd fight. But for me it is Metal Gear Solid 4 no doubt about it.

The Snake vs Liquid battle at the end is on of my favorite moments in video games period.

Never played Geometry Wars, but I'm not especially keen on MGS4, either soo... Quite the stalemate I've found myself in =X

Never saw the appeal of Geometry Wars. Maybe it was playing on a nostalgia I've never had. I love me some SNAAAAAKE though.

The pants-shitting guy in Metal Gear just about pushes my vote to Geometry Wars, but goddamnit, there's something about Kojima's idiotic stories and garbage dialogue that ends up working for me. It could be the highest form of camp in any medium.

MGS4 has some of the most memorable sequences in any video game ever, for that I will give it my vote. But Geometry Wars is pretty amazing.

This is a great matchup, love it.

This has to be the weirdest matchup possible. Can't vota cause I haven't played either game.

Crawling through the microwave hallway in MGS4 made me tear up a little, so I feel like that says a lot. Kojima's creative output isn't perfect, but it sure is ambitious, weird, and sometimes campy, and I can get behind that.

But let it be said that Geometry Wars is no slouch; it is a cornerstone twin-stick shooter with a fantastic aesthetic that kickstarted downloadable games on consoles.

Gotta go MGS4 though.

Well, I caved and voted for MGS4 anywhoo, if only because while as a whole I'm not a fan, there are certainly a number of truly memorable moments peppered throughout that game. Plus it still kinda gets my vote by default, as for all I know I might loathe Geometry Wars or something. Unlikely, but since I haven't played it, what I would think is still completely up in the air.

Looks like MGS4's going to win regardless, though!

I can't even believe Geometry wars in in this fucking thing and not STALKER or Arma.

Having just finished Metal Gear Solid 4 a few days ago. I wanted it back in june of 2008 but my ps3 broke before then, after that never went back even though i love Metal Gear. It was dumb but so damn awesome.....everything i wanted it to be and i wasn't disapointed in the 3rd,4th, and 5th chapter. I love me some Geometry Wars but, but.......METAL GEAR.

I Geometry Wars is pretty great, but dammit if MGS4's ridiculousness isn't some of the best shit ever. My friend watched me play it start to finish in one day. We were transfixed.

MGS4 is the buildup of a decade's worth of crazy-ass story and hype. The fact that it actually delivered is astounding and earns my vote.

It was with this Metal Gear that I came to realization that Mr. Hayter is not a very good voice actor, especially when compared to Akio Otsuka. Luckily it didn't hold the experience back too much and I enjoyed it enough on my first playthrough. I tried going back last year and found it unbearable. This game aged fast, like all MGS games do I guess. Still, it's the clear winner here.

Geometry Wars is arguably a more important game. But I'm a huge, drooling Metal Gear fan, so we know where my vote went.

I love both of these games but had to go with Geometry Wars. I'll be happy with either game taking it, though.

Metal Gear?

Geometry Wars helped legitimize digital distribution for consoles. It may not be the best game, but it might be the most important.

@zombiepie: But see I think "most important" and "best" are two entirely different lists. If the conversation here is most influeantial then I feel like this tournament would be going completely other directions on some of these votes. I think the conversation here is "best" or "most fun" or just generally what impressed the most.

Geometry Wars is (most likely) more fun.

By the way some people talk about Geometry Wars, I'm surprised it's not winning.

I really like the MGS series, and 4 is definitely no exception. I don't think it's got a chance of winning "game of the generation", but it's got my vote for this round at least.

It's got to be MGS4, if only for how Kojima kept my interest for 10 hours worth of cutscenes.

Everyone who chooses Metal Gear over Geometry Wars is a bad person.

I don't care about Metal Gear Solid in the least bit, and honestly, this is a relatively unfair match-up. One game is simple, and in its simplicity lies its complexity (Geometry Wars). The other game is complex and convoluted, and in that there is no simplicity which muddles the entire experience. Moreover, without playthroughs of previous games, MGS4 is kind of a wash to me.

Geometry Wars gets my vote by miles upon miles.

Snake vs Liquid Ocelot is one of my favourite gaming scenes ever. Got to give my vote to MGS4.

Also dat Snake ass.

Whatever nanomachines madness the story ultimately suffers from, MGS4 wins out purely because of the entire Shadow Moses chapter, from the callbacks to the first MGS to the fact that you finally get to pilot REX.

MGS4 brought a man tear to my eye multiple times so clearly it wins.

Geometry Wars.

There is no reason it should be losing over just another metal gear game.

While geometry wars was one of the most enjoyable xbox arcade games I own I cant help but vote for MGS 4. The story was crazy and didn't really make sense at all but I was blown away the first time I booted up this game. It was my first game on the PS3 and was the best looking game I had played at the time. They made the stealth more optional as well and just the controls were leagues above the other mgs games before it. And dat Raiden introduction cinematic.

MGS4 I guess. Neither game struck my fancy much, that said, I did actually finish MGS4.

Not super hot on either, but I'm especially not into MGS games.
