This is Howard Stern discussing "gamers", with soundbites and a mass amount of ignorance;

The question is; how right/wrong is he?

Personally, I believe video games are the natural progression of media (now accounting for 60% of the industry) and deserve to be accepted as the next evolution of storytelling, just as literature sprang from spoken stories and a large amount of television and film comes from literature.
Obviously being on a gaming site I expect the majority of you to agree with this, but it makes for an interesting listen all the same. His ridiculous mocking of "gamers" is unjustified, although it has to be said the soundbites he presents seem to have been selected as the most stereotypical "gamer" attributes - not knowing what an income is, or dressing as a character.

Coming from the UK, I've never listened to Stern before (he's an American radio host as far as I know, my knowledge ends at that) but he seems to be a real asshole.

Is he just trolling? What are GB's thoughts on the views of those such as Stern or in the general public/media?
Do you go out and show your geeky side? Or do you hide it away in "your parent's basement"?

EDIT: Put every instance of the word "gamer" in quotemarks to please those who seem to take offence at it's use.

Has to be a joke, surely? Or the interviewer purposely chose the most dweeby gamers with the most annoying voices to further his point.. I mean Jesus, the fourth guy sounds like Plinkett from RedLetterMedia. Either that or the interviews were a parody and Stern's just being a gullible dummy.

That's why I ask about Stern, I've only heard this from him but he just seems to be an older generation host who can't accept change. It's almost embarrassing his obsession with mocking the interviewees, even if one/several of the guys sounds like cartoon characters. Plus his comments about being unable to make a living from video games - the explosion in recent years of reviewers, sites and even tournaments revolving around video games totally voids his credibility.

And, as I mentioned before, he just sounds like a douche.

I think he's just another guy that likes to start up shitstorms of ignorance for more listeners--most notably people who would be pissed off by his talk. Kinda like that Glenn Beck, and if anything this is almost an exact replica of that very radio session about Glenn Beck pissing on gamers. So yeah... trolling for fame basically.

Howard's Stern job is as important as AVGN's. They're not contributing to society except entertaining people and that's fine by me, but Stern shouldn't be acting like he's doing the most important thing in the world. He's in the same fucking category.

Sounds like he's douching it up pretty badly. They're not well-informed, and the guys they interviewed hopefully aren't representative of the audience of the medium as a whole.

And yeah, I'm not sure he knows if these people have a job or are building a career and stuff like that. And Howard Stern? He's not doing the most noble thing in the world, just entertainment. He could be a teacher or something important instead. Sex ed, probably.

Stern is a radio comedian of sorts.  He's one of the original "shock jocks" and earns a living by being controversial but in a jocular way.   Everything is satire to a certain extent, so I don't take any of it seriously.  How can you when his favorite guests are strippers and porn stars?   Stern takes the role of ignorant (liberal) mainstream America, and plays to the man on the street driving to work in the morning.  It's almost a high school jock attitude but even those guys play Halo and COD these days.  If you're going to lampoon gamers, what better place than a video game convention?  It could have easily been a comic book, Star Wars/Star Trek, anime or any other niche culture.  It's Stern's job to mock everything.

An interesting note is "Wombat" of the Cheapassgamer.com podcast, The CAGcast, used to work for Howard Stern and recently, he and CAG creator, "Cheapy D" were invited on the show after they won a charity auction.  Stern made fun of them, too like he does everyone.  Of course, those are two married with children guys who earn a decent living, so that negates Stern's overall portrayal of gamers.  Like I said, it's all meant to be a joke.

Oh wow, they have nothing better to do than to stereotype gamers and take the worst random sound bytes and make fun of them? they are sadder than the people they're making fun of.

I listen to Howard every day. I think its funny when he attacks specific groups such as gamers, becasue he is a gamer and geek himself. He plays chess every day, and is a huge comic book nut(He loves Superman and Batman). I dont think he has ever played a game, but if he did i have a feeling he would be hooked.

Dude used to play a lot of video games. It's probably just for listeners. I used to listen to his show a lot, and one of his best segments was sending his people to Star Trek and comic book conventions, and interviewing cosplayers. Shit is generally hilarious.

Basically. I like howard but part of his appeal is his reaction to things he's ignorant about.

Look at that recently cancelled show Breaking In. The "gamer" on that show is how media (and the public that absorbs it) views gamers in general.

To be fair he does mention what a loser he was in school playing cards while everyone else was out partying.

To me it basically seems like he picked out the biggest losers of the bunch he interviewed in order to make his point. People unfortunately do that kind of shit all the time.
I guess it's either that, or a lot of the people who go to game conventions are actually basement dwelling neckbeards like he makes them out to be. But either way, neither example is truly representative of the majority of who people who play video games.

I don't dislike Stern, in fact I used to love listening to him in the mid-nineties, but that was a long time ago. I didn't watch the clip because I really don't care what his opinion is of people that play video games. Stern's a dinosaur, and from my experience, more often than not, dinosaurs have negative things to say about video games and the act of  "wasting" your time with them. Opinions will change when the dinosaurs die off and a new generation is present.

i remember watching him on E when i was in middle school. it was pretty funny show to watch. it was like him talking on the radio but camera on him.

yes, he is a troll. he is a comedy type of radio person. he is into porn and strippers all the time. they just showed a stereotype of nerd that was there. i'm sure there are people out there that are nerdy that don't act like it. i know a guy that didn't look like he was into video games but we were talking about video games and star wars.

That's his job. Do you honestly think he's going to have an intelligent conversation about a topic? Also if you want to be annoyed at something be annoyed at the term gamer. Ugh I would never go out and say," I'm a gamer," you just say you enjoy games like someone enjoys film or music.

Video games aren't the next evolution of storytelling, really, and so far I've seen nothing to indicate that games are better at telling stories than any other medium (Ebert may have been wrong about many things concerning games, but he was correct in noting that there is no "Citizen Kane" of video games). That said, listen to what he says and then wander around these boards for awhile. You'll find that a lot of what he says is true of a lot of gamers. Sure, people don't like to be called out on it, but it's true. It's easy to do that sort of snarking about any group of people who share an activity, though, so I'm not sure gamers should take any offense by it given who the criticism is coming from.

I do think that gamers should wonder why people have this particular view of them, though. It's easy to dismiss, but the stereotype is there for a reason.

Howard Stern is waaaay too old to know what he's talking about. Plus, he's just a negative douche anyway.
