I haven't heard the NIN version because I don't fancy rotting my brain, I was going to say Johnny Cash but then I saw the Kermit version. Kermit takes it.

@girdz: The dark song and the hilariously dark imagery make it into one delightfull bittersweet version of the song.

Both are amazing and I think Johnny Cash's version is the best cover of any song that I've ever heard. But I prefer NIN's.

I agree.  Personally I am not a fan of Nine Inch Nails and Cash made it his own and it turned out way better than the original

@Rallier: I remember seeing that awhile ago and getting freaked out by it. Now it is just a "fucked up funny" type of video.

Johnny Cash is definitely my favorite. Sure, Trent's original is also a classic but Johnny's version is one of my favorite songs ever. The emotion he conveys and the climactic ending really make it a unique experience. The fact that he was so close to death also made the song that much more moving for me. Oh, and the music video is fantastic.

It's a hard one for me. The fact Trent wrote the original gets him some points, but The Man in Black sure brings more gravity and meaning to the whole thing, especially at that stage in his life. I guess the person I am now (as opposed to when I was an Angry Young Man™) prefers the cover version.

And yes, the film clip is one of the most wonderfully bittersweet celebrations ever.

Johnny's was waaaay better, so much emotion behind his voice. When i first heard both versions, i thought that the NiN version was a cover.

That's also what I thought.

I'm a fan of pretty much anything "metal", but Johnny Cash just make the song sound so much more meaningful and personal-- and not to mention that it may be my favorite cover out of all of the music realm.

I like much of Nine Inch Nails' other stuff, but I differently prefer Johnny Cash's version of Hurt.
