Does that mean we should toss all the dumb FMV shit we can at him just for the hell of it? Because I want to stretch the definition as far as it can take me.

Justin McElroy is a hero among men.

Also, I wonder how deep down this rabbit hole he intends to go. Would, say, Myst or Riven count, despite only having a little bit of FMV?

Here's what Justin said in the comments:

"I think I’m gonna try to stick to games that were predominantly FMV, interactive movies. But I’ll probably branch out into others as it becomes necessary to feed my psychosis."

There's hope!

If he doesn't get Vinny to guest on a video (as our FMV specialist) then he done fucked up.

And as others have said, this is something stupid I can get behind.

@rockyraccoon37: Probably for the best, for now. Although I'd love to see him bang his head against Maabus.

I don't generally go to Polygon much (most of their content is pretty straightforward press-release style stuff, which I don't care for), but this I can really get behind. I played an embarrassing amount of Mad Dog McCree as a child.

The best FMV game I've ever played was Road Avenger/Road Blaster. It was actually really good. (as far as FMV games go anyhow) I'm a little bummed that it was released for iOS and not Android a while back, but then after playing Dragon's Lair on my Galaxy, I decided maybe that wasn't such a bad thing. The timing felt all kinds of off. I recently downloaded the PSP version of Dragon's Lair to my Vita, and it's much better.

Unfortunately DL2 and Space Ace never surfaced on PSP, I should really get Dragon's Lair Trilogy again some day. So maybe those kinds of games don't work so good on that platform. *shrugs* Man, I always wanted a Sega CD when I was a kid. Hell, I still want one. I'd love to get into retro gaming, but finding a nice working retro TV to play retro consoles on is not easy, so any retro gaming I partake in is of the less than legitimate kind that I'm fairly certain we can't talk about here.

The TV thing is why I passed on that Jaguar plus five games down at the local mom and pop games shop. (it has an RF hookup)

They've actually already talked on twitter about doing this. It's a very real possibility.

I'm going to have a bit of a problem if there isn't at LEAST a highlights video accompanying these reviews going forward. How am I supposed to feel the crushing weight of Power Rangers nostalgia from one brief, GIFfy glimpse into that vast expanse of awful?

I'm pretty sure he'll run into trouble once he tries to track down the European titles from non-English speaking countries. Maybe the German, Italian, Spanish and French games saw enough sales to actually be available, but some of the Swedish ones are pretty much impossible to find even here in Sweden, and I'm sure pretty much all countries with game developers or just somewhat active TV production studios got FMV games made during the multimedia craze of the early 90's.

Well, if this leads to video footage of Justin McElroy playing... Harvester, or something, I might just have to go to Polygon for things.

I freakin' love Justin. This is a feature GB should've had years ago, especially with FMVinneo as well as fans of the site sending old games in.

I really like the McElroys, and love FMV games, but I cannot endorse anything Polygon does.

I'm at a difficult crossroads with this one.

Dammit.

You can't endorse coverage of video games?

You're missing out on some great content from some really talented people by writing off the entire website.

I bet he only does popular FMV games. Like I can name two that are great that most people have never even heard of.

Psychotron

Commander Blood

@rockyraccoon37 : No I can't endorse Polygon. They moderate constructive feedback when it suits them. I understand if you disagree and are ok with people who are constructively telling them their articles aren't up to par should be deleted and given warnings, but I don't agree with censoring constructive criticism.

What is the point if the reviews aren't videos? Justin's great but this is a waste of time for me. Funny as his writing can be it's less than 1% as funny as an actual clip of said FMV game.

I unfortunately have to agree with this, and I've never posted on Polygon. The comments are very uncomfortable there and the site's agenda is not for me. Usually never visit there anymore as much as I like Phil Koller and some others.

@geraltitude: Perhaps you aren't one of us who does most of their internet-ing at work where videos are actually a liability, but such people exist, trust me.

May give it a watch, Justin is a bit hit or miss with me. Though with FMV games being kind of light on actual gameplay though, there's less of a chance that his more annoying tendencies/opinions will overpowering his positives.

Yeah, Commander Blood is amazing. It was at least released in English though, unlike it's sequel Big Bug Bang: Le Retour de Commander Blood. And I very strongly doubt he'll actually go for non-English FMV games, which there are plenty of. I'm at least entirely sure there were lots of them released in France, Germany, Finland and Sweden during that era, and most certainly there were releases in pretty much every country with a somewhat active computer industry that wasn't at war during the time.
