Medieval sword fighting games
And of course you had to say "apart from Mount and Blade". Hmm, Mount & Blade: Warband? =D
" And of course you had to say "apart from Mount and Blade". Hmm, Mount & Blade: Warband? =D "despite all the praise, i'm still looking forward to a budget title sword fighting game that's epic in scale and, well, more strategic.
" I would say go pick up an Elder Scrolls game. "This would not be a bad choice. Out of that, I personally I recommend Oblivion.
" @MythDarK: he did say 3rd person though. I second the Demon's Souls suggestion. "You can play Oblivion in third person.
" @FlamingHobo said:It's still playable from a third-person perspective, regardless." @Turambar said:No you can't. You can view it from third person. Playing it from third person is a fool's errand. Dragon Age Origins, play as a warrior with two handed specialization. I had fun with the combat and the story is great.
" @MythDarK said:Explain strategic? Turn based? Warband is as good as it gets." And of course you had to say "apart from Mount and Blade". The game did that method of combat extremely poorly, to the point where I doubt anyone would actually want to play the game like that. Sure, fine, you can play it in third-person. But it was also unplayable, making it not worth the consideration when asking for suggestions for good third person games." @Turambar said:

Agreed, only "M&B Warband" and "Die by the sword" use manual medieval combat, and are also the only two that apply physics to sword damage. Since DBTH is essentially a dead franchise, M&B is the only game in town for this very specific kind of play.
Everything else uses locked animations and no physics and are not comparable at all. God of War, Bayonetta, Dante's inferno, Devil May Cry, they're all arguably "medieval" in the use of swords, and feature 3rd-person combat, but they're obviously not alternatives for M&B Warband's gameplay.
I think the OP is wishing Warband had higher production values, and he's not alone in this. It's impressive what they've accomplished with the original team of 2 and the subsequent team of 9. Though the core gameplay is tons of fun(I've got 67 hours in Warband, not counting the time spent on the first game), I can't help but see unfulfilled potential everywhere in the game.

"They really should have worked on the singleplayer some more (A common issue in reviews) and you can't mod the multiplayer, so graphics mods are out. That is a major issue, but I have trouble believing anyone who gave M&B a real shot, would turn away for production values. the poster already knows its awesome, but theres a distinct lack of other choices in M&B's genre, which is the main issue.
