New Double Fine kickstarter!

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/doublefine/double-fines-massive-chalice

No Caption Provided

"If turn-based tactics and feudal fantasy had a lovechild, and that offspring founded a mighty century-spanning dynasty, it would be MASSIVE CHALICE.

We're inspired by classic tactical strategy games like X-COM, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Fire Emblem, as well as Game of Thrones’ array of noble families. With these influences in mind we’re creating an epic, replayable turn-based tactics game where you train generations of heroes to repel a demonic invasion.

MASSIVE CHALICE is a single player turn-based tactics game within a multi-generational strategy campaign built for replayability.

As an immortal King or Queen, you must unite your kingdom under a powerful dynasty, eliminate the demonic threat, and reforge the MASSIVE CHALICE!"

and the best news? MASSIVE CHALICE is helmed by Brad Muir

They're looking for $725,000, with 28 days to go, and it looks pretty damn good. And yes, the video is hilarious.

I'm pretty pro Double Fine and Brad Muir, but I don't like it when companies launch a new kickstarter before they've delivered on their previous one.

Interesting, but it's a shame they went with the most generic theme possible. I'm sure they'll have some kind of interesting slant on the whole medieval setting, but I honestly expect a lot more creativity from Double Fine =(

Anything from Brad gets a thumbs up from me, I loved Iron Brigade a whole lot, and he just seems like a cool dude in general.

Had a similar reaction. A fantasy themed tactics game from Double Fine sounds great, but.. eh..

I think of any place on the internet, GB is the place where i can say that Brad Muir deserves our money. Not just because this is an awesome idea (i loved FF Tactics), but purely due to the hours of entertainment that "man with the XD face" has provided for our community.

Go, give him your money duders!

I was interested when they said "Tactical RPG", sold when they said "generation-spanning", and then all-in when they said "Brad Muir".

Brad Muir making a turn-based tactics game sounds like something I would back... if I felt like backing any other kickstarter projects. We'll see.

That video was really good. I hope they get backed and put out something cool but I've long been over Kickstarting games I won't see for another year and hoping I'm still interested and then hoping it turned out good. Heck, the main reason I backed Broken Age was for the Behind the Scenes videos and it looks like those will be free for anyone to watch. If it comes out as interesting as it sounds I'll pick it up.

@barrabas: they are being developed by different teams. When did people forget that even midsized companies have dozens of people working on different things at once? Double fine isn't an indie company with only 5 employees.

I backed Brad Muir because (A) I cannot deny the smile and (B) I want to support Double Fine. Yes, I realize that Broken Age isn't out yet, but that developer is worth investing in. I have enjoyed every game they have produced. Plus they are honest and up front about whatever situation they are in. Are they perfect? Nope. But I love what they make and I want them to stay around.

And who know, if Massive Chalice is a success then maybe they will actually make Brazen.

I don't know if comments like these exist out of cynicism or not paying attention to the actual thing but they give a full explanation of why they're going with the Kickstarter at this stage. First, they have up to 3 teams able and ready to work on projects whereas Broken Age is just funded and assigned for just one. Second, Brad went around to publishers and they all denied his bid for Brazen, which was an offshoot of an Amnesia Fortnight effort. Third, since they can't make a follow-up to Iron Brigade as Microsoft owns the IP, they decided to go with a new idea and have it on a place where people can directly support new ideas without publishers. This way if it does get funded and made, Brad and DF can have full creative control and fans can speak directly to them about the game.

The way I see it, their reasoning was well said and perfectly justified. If you clearly have no confidence in them to make Broken Age in the first place, then it doesn't matter if it came out first or not. Sure, if Broken Age is a disappointment then that would surely have affected this, but that's still confidence in DF and I trust them with my money and my time to make products that were a hell of a try if not full on great games.

I keep seeing people compare it with Fire Emblem and I don't really understand it, reading the pitch it sound much more like X-Com with some inspiration from Crusader Kings II. I have never actually played Fire Emblem but from what I understand those games don't have a strategy layer they also seem much more story and character focused.

Conceptually, this game sounds incredible. If they can deliver on it and bring the Double Fine flair, this could be an absolutely amazing game.

Take my money, Brad!

uh... those games are kinda full strategy? They're basically xcom without guns.

and I really don't see any inspiration from CK2.

The size of the company and number of products they can juggle at once is completely irrelevant to the reason I feel the way I do. I don't think you should treat consumers like they are publishers. When you ask for money in good faith by the former, I just feel you should deliver that product before asking for money again on a second. To me that seems to do the ethical thing to do. Prove you can deliver on the last product before asking for more. If you want to produce multiple games at once go by more traditional funding routes for other products. Frankly if you're a big enough company to juggle multiple products you should be big enough to also go down more traditional funding routes.

The way I see it, their reasoning was well said and perfectly justified.

I agree and just pitched in my $20 but I hope Double Fine doesn't keep going back to this well. I'm at the threshold of Kickstarter fatigue. I've contributed to numerous campaigns over the past year and I literally haven't had a single game delivered. That being said I think there's huge potential for something like FF Tactics, Fire Emblem, or Xcom medieval on PC. Square doesn't seem to be interested in doing another FFT and FE is stuck on Nintendo. Brad Muir seems to have many interesting things to say about these types of tactical games so I'm happy to contribute but if this game disappoints it will probably be the straw that breaks the camel's back.

Really? They have both a strategy layer were you make long time decisions such as research, oversee your kingdom/secret bases, and what to attack next? All I ever saw people talk about in Fire Emblem was leveling up, and tactical battles.

And yeah maybe it's not that similar to CK2 but they talk about "Arranging marriage alliances" and they also cite Game of Thrones as a reference. Sure it could be more similar to Fire Emblems Visual Novel style marriages (with a unit affected), but to me it sounds more like you will use marriages as a diplomatic tool in the strategic layer. There is also the fact that you begin with random heroes (similar to X-Com) so I doubt they would have conversations like in Fire emblem.
