Anyone else do this?

Whenever i play a game i mute the T.V and just listen to my own music, ME2 and Alan Wake are the only games i can think of where i didn't do this. Right now i'm playing through RDR with no sound and just subtitles, so i'm probably missing out on some cool stuff. On the bombcast they said there was a great sequence while entering Mexico while a mariachi band was playing, i didn't get to experience this, so i had no idea what they were talking about.

So anyone else do this? I know a lot of people do this while playing multiplayer, but i play through the entire single player of games with no sound.

I think you're alone there my friend.  Why on Earth would you play a Rockstar game with the sound off?

I often play fighting and sport games with the sound off, listen to some music or a podcast or something.

I feel it is not necessary for the experience sometimes,

However, for rockstar games and mass effect in particular. I have to listen to their soundtrack.

I just stream my music on the 360 when I'm playing on that and I want other music going.
Sound is still there but my music is playing, or podcasts.

Same goes for PS3 games (that supports it, wich isn't that many)

If it's a game I've played through before or a multiplayer game, yep. Usually music or a podcast. Got my first nuke in MW2 with no sound, was listening through this album.

I do it, but not necessarily by choice. I've got a small baby and a small house, so when he's sleeping it's either muted or really really low. I was just playing FFXIII and thinking that I feel bad for the sound and music designers on that game; all that work and it's being wasted on me because the game is muted.

I very rarely play with sound, almost never in multilayer games (this is probably a bad thing when playing battlefield). I would always rather listen to a podcast or some music.

Quite often I play games with the TV set to muted, typically so I can listen to music or a podcast through headphones. I dont do this for heavy story games like ME2 etc. or I will mute it for the "action" and then unmute it when its a cutscene.

I do it with RDR as well. It's because it's an open world game, you come to expect what is going to be in places you've already visited so you know the sounds. I did it with Just Cause 2 as well.

Yeah, not usually with no sound at all, but most of the time it's turned down with a podcast over top which gets paused whenever something comes up that I need to hear.

Sometimes, yes. Depends on the game. If it's a multiplayer shooter, then yeah, but any story-driven games, nope.

I do this when I'm replaying games, Alan Wake, for instance...I'm getting every achievement, and I've been Bombcasting it up as I replay. But playing a game for the first time? That's crazy.

I only mute fighting games because the sound of being hit makes me nervous in matches.

When I'm replaying a game, or playing multiplayer, all the time. Only very rarely do I it on the first playthrough of a game.

I always play with in-game sound. The sound is part of the experience in my opinion. If you leave it out you wont experience the game the way the devs intended.

I do it with some games and only if I'm watching a series or movies at the same time, mostly just alt-tabbing between windows.

Any game I really want to play though, I play fullscreen and with sound ofcourse.

I do this when I'm grinding in an RPG, or doing another similar monotonous thing in a game.  With the way games are with sound production and their soundtracks, I actually like to crank the volume up.

I knew a guy who used to do that as well, but he was a complete nutjob.  You're only getting 50% of the experience right there my friend.

I have never muted a game before. It doesn't 'feel' right to me, because I always think that I'm missing out on part of the game experience. As a result, games such as Mass Effect are played in silence, so I can enjoy the entire experience as it was intended. If I listen to music, I always pause it during cutscenes and stuff. Music really livened up Just Cause 2 for me, because listening to Original Prankster by The Offspring while speeding along with police behind me is one of those things that has to be done.

I agree that some games are worth listening to. I played some Battlefield Bad Company 2 with some sound one day and it was awesome, the sound design in that game is incredible. I found myself purposely going into houses to fire guns just because i like the echo.
However, that didn't last long i soon plugged in my ipod to listen to some music. I should also mention that i skip cutscenes alot too. Maybe i'm just one of those gamer who really only cares about gameplay.

Hey, everyone's allowed to play the way they want, but why the hell would you do that? You're missing out on 1/3 of the experience (gameplay, visuals, sound). You lose almost all atmosphere without the sound on. This just boggles my mind, haha.

If you haven't done it much, I suggest you give it more of a try. I seriously don't see how you can enjoy a game without a huge part of the experience.

Only if I'm replaying a game or playing multiplayer.  The game also can't require a lot of concentration to be successful, and sound can't play an integral role, like in counter-strike.

I dont understand how you could play RDR single player without sound, the story and voice acting is so good. Other than Rockstar games, I play alot of sports game and i still sometimes play better with the sound on its weird.

The only game that I can think of where I did this is Lumines, which I also play with the sound on. That game is very audio based, but sometimes the audio distracts from the focus, so I play muted if I am in my 3rd hour and am doing the final push for the 999999 score.

I did play Rock Band 2 muted for a while during the steel bladder trophy simply because 6 hours of rock music can get to you and cause you to lose focus. Especially if you are playing on a boring setting just to make sure you don't fail.

The only game I can think of that I don't listen to my own music on my laptop while playing it is Patapon. You can't play that game without the sound or with background sounds.

I've never done such but if it were a sports game where narration or sound ques are not necessary to the experience, I could see myself doing. Actually scratch that when I play multiplayer games locally I mute the tv and listen to music, but not for singleplayer
