The whole argument just seems stupid to me.
How is killing Africans in Resident Evil 5 any different than killing Spanish villagers in the 4th iteration of the series? The fact that people are critical of RE5 for showing "white on black" violence just shows that the culture that we live in is still blinded by prejudice and racism. The continued shying away from anything that is potentially offensive not only perpetrates racist notions (No one complained about the mexican, russian, and asian stereotypes in a game like Crackdown because it was not "taboo") but also is holding back gaming as a medium.
As with sexuality, the fact that gaming feels unable to capture a questionable subject matter is what stops it from becoming as mainstream and totally accepted as film. With movies like American History X, Traffic, Training Day, American Beauty, American Psycho, and others that are able to tastefully handle a potentially offensive subject matter Film has gained maturity and shed being "for kids and rebels" just as Rock and Roll music once did long ago.
That is not to say that games are immature in any shape or form but until game developers becoming capable of tapping into potentially uncomfortable topics they can make no real progress as a medium. Even Wii which has captured a new audience of grandmothers and parents is regarded as serious as a board game. If we want games to progress we need to be able to handle minor "racism" which is not even evident similar to how Mass Effect was able to tastefully handle sexuality.
A little rambly....but what do yall think about this?
Racism in Gaming
The simple truth is there is no racism in video games its just people who look for it and make it seem like it is and then blow it out of proportion like a lot of people tend to do with things.
There's a specific fallacy in calling it Resident Evil 5, the fallacy of assumed motives.
Chris Redfield isn't killing black people in Africa because they're black. He's killing black people in Africa because they've been mutated with a virus and they're trying to kill him. I'm pretty sure those who were calling anything about RE5 racist are doing so as a gut reaction, and haven't actually examined the game. And those people don't exist on these forums.
Personally I dont think the game is being racist at all
its frickin black zombies!! & its in africa..
its not like they took all the african american zombies
& said..Ok every1! only the blacks are zombies..
now everyone run! =)
anywho
I cant wait to play this game!
Did you guys even read my OP? I'm saying that RE5 isn't racist but that some people are apparently uncomfortable with it...
