Ugly game characters
I have been playing Nier recently and got to thinking about how the main character is not a good looking dude. Most games main protagonist's are pretty boys (often they look like they should be staring in a CW hour long drama) or they are big tough dudes (Marcus and Dom style). The ugly character is usually a shifty side character. This on the other hand is your main character.
I have been racking my brain (what little I have) for any other games with characters that break the pretty boy mold. Any ideas?
Plus isn't it weird to have a character like this come out of Square?
I have a problem with Metroid games because the Space Pirate designs are painfully shite, same for guns in resistance and the zombie enemies.
These problems make really good games look cheap and rushed.
Halo and Killzone 1 are good examples of good visual design really adding to a game *Hates barrage of missiles from Metroid and Resistance fans*
I'd actually argue that Marcus and the other major Gears of War characters are all hideous, with muscular/skeletal structures that could not possibly belong to actual humans outside of tragic genetic deformation. Also, Marcus's doo-rag/soul patch combo. Ugh.
In Nier, I actually named the main character Hamburg because his face resembles the ground beef of a hamburger patty.
Square Enix execs made Cavia change the main character for the Western release so it'd have a better chance of selling to the God of War crowd. Here's how Nier looks post-timeskip in the Japan-exclusive Nier Replicant:"Plus isn't it weird to have a character like this come out of Square? "
What is true is that DLC released for Gestalt features gamplay set in the past when Nier was a young man, which uses the younger character model from Replicant.
You've played the game, yes? I'm talking about the 5-year timeskip that occurs midgame." @Axersia: Uh, no. There's no time-skip. Nier (released in Japan as Nier Gestalt) and Nier Replicant are almost the exact same game. Gestalt is the primary version and was released on both the PS3 and 360. Replicant was a PS3 exclusive and only released in Japan. The only difference between the games is that in one, Nier is an older man with a daughter, while in Replicant, he's a younger man with a sister. Anyway, I own both versions of the game (it's my favorite PS3 game) so I'm well aware of the differences between them. Still doesn't change the fact that it was originally supposed to be a sibling story and that Square Enix made Cavia adjust their vision of the game for the Western release. Yoko Taro, the game's director, has stated so in an interview. Square Enix USA even asked them to cancel Nier Replicant at some point so they could get the game out the door sooner.
I always thought the guys and girls from Chrono Trigger looked a little....pointy and odd. They looked fine out of their display pics but...just slightly too anime. Specially Ayla.

" @Hailinel said:Although that is the case, I think the story would of had less of an impact if it had been a brother saving his sister story, the relationship between father and daughter works so well. Maybe I'm wrong but Nier made you care about his daughter, much better than Heavy Rains father+son relationship. "Get your hands off my sister" doesn't sound as dramatic. You've played the game, yes? Queue blue oyster bar music. Or i guess i could just do this.
" Some poor dude's demon's souls character... "have you ever tried reading that sentence out loud?
It's funny because Miranda's looking at him like "I <3 that man and I'm going to marry him and bear his troglodyte children!"
" @paradox121 said:Yeah I know. And his Dragon Ball stuff looks fine. But I just always found the small icons and what not in Chrono Trigger really odd. Overtly masculine, mixed with that very 90s fantasy style clothing. I dunno, maybe Im just being picky. If nothing else youve gotta admit Magus was pretty damn ugly."
