Where's the "all of the above" option?
Which of these do YOU think should most warrant an M rating?
Violence, then Nudity, then swearing (the last 2 shouldn't even warrant an M in my opinion, Teen at the most)
If someone imitates swearing, they might piss some people off but they're okay.
If they imitate nudity, they might get arrested but they'll be fine.
If they imitate violence, someone could get hurt or killed (probably the latter if modern games are any indication). Pretty serious.
@BeachThunder: The weird thing is that real violence is very taboo in western society. Actual swearing and nudity arguably less so; a drive by shooting will get a lot more attention than some guy without pants in a public park
Where is the "none" option?
I don't support the categorization and classification of items based on the "type" of content they contain. Leave those decisions up to the viewer, reader, or player. Unless, of course, you're going to head to the local library and start labeling every book.
None. Let the buyer know what's going to be in the box and let them decide what to consider it based on their personal values.
If you put a gun to my head i would say violence, i guess, but it really depends on the game. Manhunt warrants that rating for its insane violence while your common GTA game has the same rating yet its violence is not nearly as bad, also nudity isn't as bad as everyone says it is and western society is just oddly obsessed with it.
If I was currently nude while writing this post and also swearing, no one would care. But if I was currently murdering my room-mate while typing this, then there may be a problem
It really bothers me how Western society views violence in comparison to nudity. If you take a gander at some studies, you'll see that in Europe, where sex is an open topic of discussion for families and schools, the teen birth rate is way down, but it's the opposite here. People assume that "Oh, if we don't talk about it to little Johhny/Johnette, he/she will never think about it!"
Honestly, stupidest idea ever. I don't know how the West hasn't just literally fallen in on itself and disappeared off of the face of the earth. (Btw, I live in Canada, I'm not trying to be a snotty European or anything)
The difference is not in real life, but what you are watching as your form of entertainment. Most people have different standards for what's acceptable in each one of the two. For example, if someone walked into the room while you were typing that post and saw ether a violent scene in a horror movie or a stand up comedian swearing like a sailor playing on the TV behind you they wouldn't give it a second look and probably wouldn't have even noticed it was on. The same situation but a sex scene or porno was playing on the TV, then they would call you out on it and make a big deal out of it.@dancingpolkabear said:

In order,
- Nudity
- Violence
- Swearing

How dare I be watching two people have sex when I could be watching a man saw his own ankle off to escape a room in which he was trapped with someone put to the task of shooting him?The difference is not in real life, but what you are watching as your form of entertainment. . . . Do you ever take a step back and wonder?
If there are three news stories; one that involves someone swearing, one that involves nudity, and one involving violence - I would say the third one is least likely to be censored.@BeachThunder: The weird thing is that real violence is very taboo in western society. violence will mess up your psyche especially if you were right on the tipping point and you seem fine. like you could be right on the verge of going totally crazy, violence will push it over the edge much much more than nudity or swearing. also, how is swearing even offensive? it''s just filler words to me.
i see why people dont like nudity because there's some pretty nasty shit you can do in a bed, but honestly it's just a part of everyone's life. i see my own dick on a very, very regular basis.
i remember when people were doing lets plays of duke nukem forever, during the queen boss they would censor the obviously cartoonish alien tits but the mangled bodies of dead space marines and exploding of aliens was just fine. seems backwards to me.

the nude while swearing, not the murder.

Violence. Nudity shouldn't be an issue at all..
+1
It's funny, I just watch Kramer vs. Kramer. That movie's rated PG and yet there's nudity. I was surprised, but I don't necessarily disagree with it.
Sexuality is fine, but nudity itself probably deserves the harder rating for public relations reasons and for quality control.
Not that it matters to me, as I'm 19 and no longer worried about ratings.
it would be interesting to have everyone who goes with either nudity or violence say where they're from. Mainly because of the mentality of the US vs. nudity and Germany & Australia vs. violence.
I chose excessive violence (and I happen to be from Germany) because there's some really disturbing stuff in some games. Nudity is harmless and so is swearing (kids learn the filthiest words on the playground anyway). However, I hate it when media gets an M/18/etc rating still gets censored. I have no tolerance for that.
