Book or Movie that complimented a game.  Something that helped fill in story and background.  For me it definately would have to be the Halo books.  They really give you a better appreciation for the Halo Universe and history of the spartans and the War.

I haven't read any video game spin-off books in a long time, and probably only a couple of them as a kid. As for movies, I think I gotta give it up to Mortal Kombat. It was a good movie.

Lord of the Rings, for all those LOTR games.

Is that cheating?

The Manual for Mario Kart 64. I really feel I would have had trouble understanding the complexities of that game without it. It was a great read too, it certainly presented itself as an adult read, but was nicely complimented with informative diagrams and pictures.

The Warriors, to me, will never be the same since I played the game.  They really compliment each other just masterfully.

Any of the forgotten realms books, or Escape From New York, while not directly tied to MGS it was the inspiration for the character Snake, and it's an awesome movie everyone should see.

The Mass Effect books really flesh out the universe well, And The Warriors game goes hand and hand with the movie for me now, all movie games should look to that for inspiration

If it's not cheating that's my answer too.  But I do think this is almost not fair. There's no denying that Lord of the Rings definitely filled in every single backstory to -any- game set in Middle Earth though.

The Mass Effect books were great, and I've only read one Halo book, but it was pretty sweet.

Video Game books  and movies dont compliment games they are just stupid.
If you want to play a game play a real game.
If you want to read a book read a real book.
If you want to watch a movie watch a real movie.
