VLC's great.

I'm inclined to think you have a hardware problem.

VLC is great but it's a shitty converter and it's got some issue with the play list. If you are a mac user then just download Perian. Personally I think it's a hardware issue you have because I never experience freeze.

What kind of movies? Files on your hard drive or DVDs?

Try Media Player Classic. There's also a GPU-accelerated version called Media Player Classic Home Cinema.

Media Player Classic. Then again, I've tried a few of the others and none froze for me, even on my old setup. Something wrong on your end?

Definetely not VLC. People get conned into using it because it can "RUN ANYTHING!!?"

Get media player classic and a codec pack. If you can't find it, I suppose I can compile one.

Use Media Player Classic. It's not in the poll, though. All you need is to download CCCP and it will install it for you. If that doesn't work, you should probably get a new computer.

Messing with codecs is a nightmare.  Many codec packs will install spyware, and there's no such thing as a complete codec pack anyways.  I highly suggest VLC over any other media player.

iTunes is a waste of time. The codecs from Combined Community Codec Pack are the only ones I have ever installed and they play everything. CCCP does NOT include spyware.

This is what I use and I've never had a problem with it.  I also have VLC installed because there are rare occasions where the format doesn't play on MPC but does on VLC.  I have Divx player, QuickTime, Window Media, etc...but never use them.  Media Player Classic is all you really need for 99% of the stuff on the web.  I would suggest you take a look at the K-Lite Codec Pack (Full) for MPC and all popular codecs.

VLC is a gift from Tim Schafer and works on the principle of a rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle.

I have NEVER had any media player freeze unless the file was corrupted, but VLC is my favorite by far.

Winamp is the win, but it isn't the greatest for videos.  VLC is the way to go for movies.

CCCP - Media Player Classic Homecinema.

CCCP is the best codec pack you'll ever find.

I've had problems with VLC with certain media files and the Media Player on CCCP works the best.
