Naruto (Shippuuden included), D.Gray-Man, One Piece, and Death Note are my top recommendations.  All English sub only, of course.  Skip all filler episodes, too.

I'm currently watching Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood and the new The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.  Also Detroit Metal City is awesome.

Good animes huh? Well a good place would be to check hell and make sure it's frozen over because there is no such thing as a good anime, they are all horrible and I find them bad.  Now don't come at me as tell me I'm a close minded troll fucking loser. Don't go wasting your time looking for a thing that doesn't exist, happiness and good animes are all fiction, you'll never find a woman to love you and you will never find an entertaining anime.

That being said you could try finding great and awesome animation looking to another asian country, such as Korea.

Also Princess Mono whatever the fuck was an alright show, and Cowboy Bebop was also pretty sweet. Thems the exceptions what prove the rule.

Gungrave!

Also when you said you've already seen bleach, have you been watching on cartoon network? or watching japanese subs? because there is a new episode every week and its far past what CN has.

Like most said I'll also say, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Ghost in the Shell, Naruto, Rurouni Kenshin!, Deathnote. There are alot.

No, it might just be you being American. Nobody does that in England. And even if they did, who cares, people are free to do what they want.

Also, not in the real world? That's 5 people out of your entire circle of aqcuaintance

People shouldn't wear cat ears in public.
People shouldn't wear cat ears in public.
With all the talk about cat ears, I thought I'd mention Tayutama: Kiss on My Diety.  Also, To Love-Ru for some cute alien romance.  Both these series are in the "cute girls" lite-comic adventure category, if that's your taste.

These recommendations don't have very good action scenes or romance.. actually, it would be normal to find them boring. Sorry.
* Planetes - The characters are a bit overdone, but something about the stories makes it work. Several of the episodes were very moving.
* Boogiepop: Phantom - It's a very gloomy show, and it's a sequel to a (very very good!) book.. but, the core of the story is a mystery that should interest you a bit. Sort of X-Files - themed.
* Kino's Journey - Each episode is a short story about a traveler arriving in a strange country, and staying for 3 days. Based on a book.
* Mushishi - Uh. Even though you might find this one very boring, and overly serious, it might be worth your time to check it out. It's very beautiful.
So, yeah.

@Kaizzy: Cowboy Bebop is fantastic. The english dubs are actually good, and the western-scifi setting fused with jazz works very well.

I watched Noein recently and though it was excellent, some very well animated sci fi nonsense with a good story.

also Planetes which is my second favourite anime, but god damn the dvds are expensive.

Action-packed and school girls?

Shikabane Hime (Corpse Princess)

Schoolgirls become undead killing machines for the sole purpose of killing anything else that comes back from the dead. 25 episodes. Good stuff.

@arca: Quality programming like Eastenders and Big Brother?

There are a few gems now and then on TV, but it's not the be all and end all. No need to sound like an ignoramus.

Only problem with Gantz was there was too much hesitation.  I couldn't stand it.

Anything I'd recommend has already been said multiple times.

  • Rosario+Vampire - School girls and fighting, little bit of ecchi though.  Manga is much better
  • Death Note - Pretty much everyone's favorite anime, including Naruto fanboys, you'll see why.
  • Fullmetal Alchemist - And FMA: Brotherhood, its a remake of the MANGA and not the anime though, because the anime is much much different from the manga, remember that
  • Hellsing Ultimate - Its pretty good, it's an OVA and released yearly though.
  • The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - Randomness built upon randomness.  Some ecchi here and there, school girls though.

You should also consider reading manga because a lot of manga is better than the anime adaptions including Fullmetal Alchemist and Soul Eater.  Bones just did terrible on both.

May I ask what you saw?

There are some terrible ones for sure, but with anything there are some good ones that are intelligent, and dare I say thought-provoking. It won't change your mind anyway, but you shouldn't judge a whole medium based on a few things. Considering your distaste towards anime, I don't imagine you did research to find ones of particular worth.
