There are already a ton of posts on this.
But yeah it sucks.
Bandwidth caps- let's share the pain
Don't think I have one. Or at least my dad and I have never seen anything about that when looking at the bill or anything.
" Only got 250 Gigs from Comcast for 30 dollars a month. I feel ripped off, and I feel your pain. "Only? I have to pay $120 AUD a month for 100GB (although they shaped me at 80 erroneously last month, wankers).
Bent over a barrel where I live (can only get fibre), which is only supplied by one telcom, so they gouge the prices.
Unlimited for now, hopefully all that shit Canada is going through right now doesn't actually happen.
My family used to be on an "Unlimited" connection with O2, then they disconnected us for supposedly downloading 60GB, which was actually a complete lie, since I'm the only person who even knows what bit torrent is and I was at university.
So, since all "unlimited" connections are actually severely limited and throttled in the UK, we're now on a 50GB Peak 200GB Off-Peak connection and all is well.
Verizon Fios says "this thread can suck it."
I personally feel for you poor bastards without a choice...
All these people who act like this is new... or that this is rape. Rape was when we paid by the hour.
I was a bit concerned though a few months ago about my 250GB cap. But turns out it must have been a fluke or something. That or I just blame updating 4 computers with WoW's 4.0 patch.
Teksavvy right? I saw in that e-mail that people from Ontario would go from 200 to 25, I really feel bad for you man. I live in Montreal so I'll go from 200 to 60. fuckin CRTC" Mine is a sad and tragic story I know. I pay 30 dollars a month for 200GB which is now changing to 25GB for the same price because of the laws. :( "
Right now I have a 1 MB DSL line from Bell Aliant and it is unlimited. After March 1st though god only know what it will be.
How do you find your usage history? I have always been curious to know how much I use, as I'm constantly downloading something or streaming something 24/7, but I never knew how to go about finding out.
Here in Nova Scotia, all of Eastlink's services are unlimited, except for the fastest one, which has a 250gb cap.
It's disturbing... it costs them $0.01 per gig you download. Even at the cheapest rate if your limit is 250GIG it will cost them $2.50 yeah that's right, the only reason why they do the caps is to
1. Advertise unlimited
2. Increase profit
3. Charge people for going over
4. Owned by TV companies whos revenue relies on people watching.
Last years costs put it at 3 cent, that's right for 1 GIG to be downloaded cost them 3 cent... a joke if you ask me. The only reason the government allows them to get away with this is so they can sign the shady 'Can we spy on your USERS' policy and because of the huge set up costs. The main reason why the huge setup costs shouldn't cost them too much is because the internet will be around for a long time and eveyr penny of profit will negate that over the years. IT'S A LONG TERM PLAN.
So do the calculations. How MUCH do you cost the ISP and how much would it cost you to go over. ALSO 3 GOD DAMN CENT! SERIOUSLY!
Due to the lack of a landline in my flat (and the insane cost BT want to install one) I use mobile broadband which costs me £25 for 7GB. It sounds bad, but it's plenty for general internet browsing & downloading small files (e.g. podcasts), and whenever I want to download anything bigger I'll take my laptop somewhere that has free wifi. It works for me.
I don't have a cap.
That being said I work for several ISPs and know how heavily they are attempting to do this in the US.
It will happen gradually, like most things, until it is normal I am sure. There are actually some places in the US that are already implementing this.
It is indeed a scary thing, just because I don't see the need other than to make the companies more money for no good reasons.
100GB, and there's not a month in the last four years when I haven't been within a few gigs of that (save for a few months when I've been out of the country some of the time). Once the 20th hits, I've got to monitor my use pretty closely. I'd love to have the 250GB Comcast limit. Heck, I'd even like the option to buy more bandwidth. But I can't. If I violate the 100GB barrier more than twice in a year, they've told me my service will be canceled.
I feel bad for the Canadians, but I suspect we'll be feeling the pain here in the States eventually. The cable companies in particular are suffering the continued loss of TV subscribers to internet downloads. They make more money off of cable plans and need some way of keeping people from switching over to internet video streams. True Internet TV cannot come fast enough, and with it the end of Cable TV as we know it. Faster please.
