In light of GB being hacked, and also my own curiousity, just thought I'd make this poll. I knew someone once who told me she had used a keylogger to hack her ex boyfriend, and told me how easy it was when someone doesn't use anti-virus. Kinda scary.

Yea, but i assume for the end user it's the same. Don't they both involve a moment of stupidity? Clicking on an .exe or something?

Yes just recently. I had a keylogger on my computer and lost two accounts. I was able to remove it with Malwarebytes. I had a regular anti-virus up the entire time too.

When I was at school a buddy of mine installed some weird software on my laptop that let him control it remotely without me knowing.  He would pop up error messages with cryptic clues as to who it was, jokes and other random stuff.  That and randomly open programs, luckily the school blocked any porn sites he tried to take me on, that could of been awkward.

I feel your pain. I'm stuck on a Mac too. If its an Intel machine, you can still run XP on it like I do so its not completely useless.

Yes.
My old, old computer got one of the 'worm' viruses that went around the world years back.
Haven't been hacked though. My friend said he did but he jiggered with his ip address and threw the haxxor off. At least thats what he says.

Sure, I've had viruses.  I don't know anyone who uses Windows who doesn't occasionally run into one.  But, hacking is another story.  When I was brand new to the internet in the 90's I used to get keyloggers and trojans from emails (I was young and ignorant).  I'd later try and log into my AOL account and find that all my settings or in one case, my password was changed.

I don't think it's a ridiculous price. If you want to see ridiculous overpriced stuff, go look at an Alienware desktop. Not to turn this into a Mac vs. PC thread, but just looking at the hardware and OS separately and judging by that would give you an incorrect view of it all. The hardware is specifically tailored to work with the OS without any hickups, which is the main reason why just buying a bunch of PC parts and putting OS X on it will make the computer slow.

@Abyssfull:   Let's be clear, there is no proof that either Linky or Al3x were involved.  All I saw was a page load of their posts "stickied" to the Newest Posts page.  Someone could have been pulling a prank or making a statement in their defense.   There is no evidence to suggest that the person who did the deed was even a Wii owner.  I personally feel that someone was sending a message, but at 3 AM PST, I'm not sure how effective it was.  Here is another forum topic on the subject as it happened.  Linky Topic Attack!

No solid proof no. From what I've seen of Al3xander though on GB, I wouldn't past him at least to whine this much on such a scale.

Even still, it's sorta becoming my thing to blame all the mysterious goings on on Linkyshinks ;P. May catch on to become a new internet meme..

I had a virus for a while, and my computer would crash to blue screen a couple of times a day.  I had AVG Antivirus, and within 8 days, AVG  fucked that virus up, and my PC is clean now.  Thank you AVG, for saving my personal stuff.

Maybe you haven't used a PC in a few decades but that is not how it works. I can build you a MAC desktop and "hackintosh" it for 1/2 the price you pay for it and it will run the same.

Note the core i5 based machine. My PC is very similar specs and built if for around 1,000$ . I wouldn't feel right paying another grand just for the OSX  ;)

Most people dont know they have one
the idea behind virus, Trojans etc isn't to break your pc just to scan it for emails credit cards etc and or use it as a drone
if your not using an anti virus you prob have something in there you just dont know about it  or your a Linux user
contrary to popular belief there is alot of shit macs can get
your hippster douche baggery has gone mainstream making it profitable to attack them

I'm running Linux and I'm fine. Although years ago our ISP (Rogers) told my family that someone had a virus and that our service would be terminated if all of our computers weren't formated within 3 days. So my dad had to reinstall Windows on all of the other computers.

This isn't to say that I'm not vigilant about what I do online. I don't pretend that I'm invulnerable, and the Mac people shouldn't either, especially since both Mac can be hacked (see Pwn2Own).

In all fairness, Windows has gotten much better. That being said I wouldn't want to go back either: I am quite happy solely using Linux.

It feels pretty violating to have someone do something like that to your data. My wife's old Win 95 computer got hacked multiple times; I think there was an IM session where the hacker stated writing in the chat-box, and making the CD draw pop out, etc. Now we're pretty good about knowing when something looks sketchy on the internet. (i.e. all of it)

I have infected my PC with a virus before. This was when I was fairly new to the concept of using my computer. At this stage though I don't think the same thing would happen me. However, I did get a virus which was actually very powerful. I had my laptop for a few months at the time, and I was shit scared it was dead, because it wouldn't login. So once I got it fixed I downloaded anti-virus software, in the form of AVG. However I use NOD32 now instead as it seems to be more effective. As for being hacked: sort of. One of my 'friends' was able to guess my password (God, I fucked up with that password), and he managed to get control over the account. For a few hours, and then I called his mom. Good times.... good times... :')

I looked at some shady porn websites a while back, also downloaded some porn off Vuze which totally fucked up my computer. It would just shut off my computer whenever i used photoshop for a while (and i use it for design so it's kinda important) and for a while whenever i used flash, including website flash ads. I fixed it for the most part, but i also think it's what killed it in the end, it was seriously slow after that.

I now stick to the holy triumvirate of comparitively safe porn sites; pornhub, Xvideo and keezmovies.

Getting hacked and getting a virus are two very different things. My computer hasn't been hacked. But I've gotten a virus or two before. Easily removed though, thanks to my trusty Norton Anti-virus software.
