I posted this over at Tested but I don't think I'll be getting any replies anytime soon.
Alright so I've been needing a laptop and I remembered my sister hasn't been using this one she has since she put a virus on it and didn't know what to do. So of course I took it and booted it up. First it says invalid configuration information please run setup program. Instead of doing that I just pressed F1 and continued. Next I get a security warning. Apparently there's spyware on it. It's the worm.win32.NetSky.
So what do I do? She's not going to be using it so any option is welcome.
How do I get rid of this virus?
" Have you tried doing a system restore? "No not yet. I just got the computer about 10 minutes ago. Excuse my ignorance but how do you do that?
" @natetodamax: Hmm alright thanks I'll try that first. "Well I would recommend you try other things first. System restore is basically a last resort method. It wipes out anything and everything.
Try Malwarebytes as well, works great, super free, and it's always good to have more than one antivirus scanner when your trying to get rid of something.
I suggest running a reputable anti-virus/anti-spyware program and seeing if it will remove the fake virus. If not, then you can try system restore (which doesn't always work) and the last method is to just reformat your computer if you know how.
" just reformat, women don't know how to keep an OS running clean and crisp anyway. Am I right guys!!? , High five! YEA! jk , except for the reformat part, thats the first thing I would do getting a computer from someone else , virus filled or not Spybot Search and Destroy + windows security essentials "Thas...thas....thas discrimination!!!
" Take the hard drive out of your computer and run a magnet over the top of it. "If the OP actually does this then it is mandatory that you send him a new HDD, you jerk.
Next time, google your virus info. Run a keyword search for the file name, suspected symptoms or computer performance issues. Ask, by telling google your question, in keyword form.
Viruses and other mal-ware are not only dangerous and mischeiveious to you. But they may effect those around you.
The life you save, might be your own.
@ZimboDK: I tried that but can't open up the registry.
@infamous021: It goes into the Blue Screen of Death when I try to go into safe mode.
@jakob187: Glad I know better than to try that.
How to get rid of the virus that is your sister? Come talk to me in person; it is not safe here on the internet.
" @Sincillian said:system restore doesn't wipe everything. that's a format. system restore restores the computer's state to how it was on a certain date." @natetodamax: Hmm alright thanks I'll try that first. " Take the hard drive out of your computer and run a magnet over the top of it. "That isn't going to fix shit. What he needs to do is microwave that sucker. I find the popcorn setting works best for spyware. Baked potato for viruses.
" Take the hard drive out of your computer and run a magnet over the top of it. "This isn't 4Chan..
" @Sincillian said:It only goes back to a certain checkpoint. Reformatting wipes anything and everything-- now THAT is the last resort for a virus." @natetodamax: Hmm alright thanks I'll try that first. "Well I would recommend you try other things first. " Download the trial for AVG Internet Security and see if running a whole computer scan and a anti-root scan will get rid of it.This. AVG is a fucking beast and I will never use another security program.

Does your laptop have any kind of System Recovery software in your installed programs list? My laptop is some sort of Dell thing, so when I want to reformat I go to System Recovery and make sure it does something called a Destructive Recovery - it wipes everything from the hard drive except the recovery partition which has Windows on it, then re-installs windows from the partition." @ZimboDK: So if I reformat I know everything will be gone and I'll need to reinstall everything using the disc but I don't think I have any here. So are there any downloadable options I can try? "
All it has is just a regular system recovery I think. How could I get a destructive recovery on there?" @Sincillian said:
