I posted this over at Tested but I don't think I'll be getting any replies anytime soon.

Alright so I've been needing a laptop and I remembered my sister hasn't been using this one she has since she put a virus on it and didn't know what to do. So of course I took it and booted it up. First it says invalid configuration information please run setup program. Instead of doing that I just pressed F1 and continued. Next I get a security warning. Apparently there's spyware on it. It's the worm.win32.NetSky.

So what do I do? She's not going to be using it so any option is welcome.

No not yet. I just got the computer about 10 minutes ago. Excuse my ignorance but how do you do that?

Download the trial for AVG Internet Security and see if running a whole computer scan and a anti-root scan will get rid of it.

Well I would recommend you try other things first. System restore is basically a last resort method. It wipes out anything and everything.

Manual removal instructions can be found here. It's a fake anti-spyware trojan. They can be quite annoying.

Try Malwarebytes as well, works great, super free, and it's always good to have more than one antivirus scanner when your trying to get rid of something.

I suggest running a reputable anti-virus/anti-spyware program and seeing if it will remove the fake virus. If not, then you can try system restore (which doesn't always work) and the last method is to just reformat your computer if you know how.

Great, free help. They've helped me with everything from software related issues to diagnosing my CPU was on its last legs. The people who mod over there know their stuff and I'd recommend them for sure.

Next time, google your virus info.  Run a keyword search for the file name, suspected symptoms or computer performance issues.  Ask, by telling google your question, in keyword form.

Viruses and other mal-ware are not only dangerous and  mischeiveious  to you.  But they may effect those around you.

The life you save, might be your own.

@Sincillian:  Hmm, I'm thinking that a reformat might be your only real option then. Symantec does have a tool to remove it here, but it might be too late to salvage the system. Give it a go though.

system restore doesn't wipe everything. that's a format. system restore restores the computer's state to how it was on a certain date.

I had one myself just yesterday.
It disabled my virus scanner, internet connection, and ability to ctrl+alt+del. But a system restore fixed it right up.

That isn't going to fix shit. What he needs to do is microwave that sucker. I find the popcorn setting works best for spyware. Baked potato for viruses.

It only goes back to a certain checkpoint. Reformatting wipes anything and everything-- now THAT is the last resort for a virus.

If you don't need any of the stored files on the laptop, I suggest you reformat it.

If playing Resident Evil has taught me one thing, to destroy the virus I think you need an MO Disk at some point. Does your computer have a card-shaped slot or preferably a hexagonal-shaped hole for a crank to fit in?

Does your laptop have any kind of System Recovery software in your installed programs list? My laptop is some sort of Dell thing, so when I want to reformat I go to System Recovery and make sure it does something called a Destructive Recovery - it wipes everything from the hard drive except the recovery partition which has Windows on it, then re-installs windows from the partition.

All it has is just a regular system recovery I think. How could I get a destructive recovery on there?

Also what the fuck is wrong with the forums?

@Sincillian: Get the system recovery started and there should be an option for the destructive one. It will probably suggest you do a) a System Restore (say no) and b) regular System Recovery (you have to choose the destructive one.) After that make sure you have time set aside to immediately after formatting run Windows Update and get all the necessary updates (run more than once to make sure you got everything) then install a good antivirus/antispyware program.
