@thedj93: Queer is a catch-all for anything that falls outside of heterosexuality or gender norms. Kind of like adding an etc. to the end so no one is left out.

Q references questioning, not queer. At least that's how I usually see the Q used.

I never understood why T was part of that. It's a pretty different thing. I mean sure if you're a T then you're almost certainly considered an L a G or a B, but I actually know an L and a G who don't approve of people being T. These alphabetic matters are perhaps better left to wiser P's then I.

#19 Posted by MattyFTM (14243 posts) -

I call them people.

I've always thought it was super weird that everyone outside of what is considered a "normal" sexuality or gender identity get lumped together in one group anyway. They're all super different. It seems really discriminatory to lump them together. It seems like you're essentially saying "all you guys are different from the "normal" people, so go over there in your special little group together". Fuck that.

@MattyFTM: That's a good point, but having LGBT groups can help people deal with discrimination and other problems they face everyday by just being themselves, and it doesn't mean that they should only socialise within that group.

I totally get that people in those groups may face similar problems which can easily lead to forming social groups and friendships. It makes total sense. I just don't like the way society feels the need to label them. They're different, we get it. I'm different. You're different. Everyone's fucking different. There is no need to slap a big fat label on them highlighting them as if they were an alien race. I've always had an issue with labels, and I think LGBT or whatever you want to call it is a particularly stupid one.

@MattyFTM: Then that's something we can both agree on!

#23 Posted by RPGee (759 posts) -

@MattyFTM: Here's a question I always like feedback on: Who do you reckon came up with a term like LGBT, or decided that a sure sign of campiness is how they talk? I'm going to say it's absolutely not the people who it's actually focused on, and that said people don't even get why it is in the first place.

Example: I play for a sporting club, and we recently had a weekend where it was about recognising gay and lesbian interaction within the community, which I reckon is a noble enough cause (although we seemed to have gotten along fine without it before; I should mention our club got money as a result, which is somewhat dubious except for the fact that everyone did it.) Part of the act, though, was wearing these rainbow-coloured bands around our wrist as part of the event, and it got me thinking: Why rainbow? I asked my gay teammate, and he had no idea. Thus, I believe it to be a heterosexual invention.

#26 Posted by kindgineer (2485 posts) -

@MattyFTM: There is absolutely nothing wrong with labels, it's the ignorant that misuse them that really makes us angry. LGBT is a grouping designed as a common-place for those that feel out of order, or alone. It is also an identifier, much like a #hashtag for twitter, for individuals interested in that type of content, to have an easier find.

As I said, it is the ignorant that really make labels a bad thing, but if we went off that logic, there would be absolutely nothing right in this world.

#27 Posted by Apparatus_Unearth (3031 posts) -

I've never heard anything but LGBT.

#28 Posted by Jrinswand (1692 posts) -

I've seen it go as long as LGBTQ2S, with the "2S" standing for "Two-Spirit," which is a Native American form of queerness.

@MattyFTM: I agree that society uses many labels in a negative context, but without labels we would not be able to distinguish between each other. Every country has different labels anyway. I wish more people would be tolerant, however the LGBT label as with many labels are used often as they are brought up a lot in the media. The various gatherings, parades etc. which highlight these communities makes a point that these people are 'different'.

The T in LGBT stands for "Transgender" which is much different from Transexual ( The "T" I think the public believes to be less accepted)

I prefer to call them by their name, but some (few) people are REALLY insistent on being put into that category, and most prefer to add the Q at the end. They prefer being called queer than "bi", which according to them gives off an air of indecision. Also in that category fall some gender queer friends of mine, those who prefer to not be any gender, male or female. Also T isn't fucked up, T is real. People who aren't comfortable with the way they were born should have the right to change that. The concept of gender is dissipating more and more every day, even though sadly there is a strong societal influence to make everyone be "normal" and act "according to god's wishes".
