I am looking for bands that are similar to Grizzly Bear, Arctic Monkeys, The Decemberists or some good mellow, folksy independent stuff. Any of you guys have anything valuable to recommend?

Non of it fits the criteria you are asking for but Joe Bonamassa's new album is hella good.

You pretty much just described Brightblack Morning Light. Although they're not good, they're excellent.

Bon Iver.

Do Make Say Think is a good folk/post-rock outlet. All instrumental, but good regardless. One of my favorite bands.

Bruce is basically the person to see for these kinds of bands.

If you're looking for folksy stuff I'll go ahead and recommend Dustin Kensrue. He's awesome.

"independent"
I have to ask... why independent? Signed artists can't be good or something?

Here you go, SXSW puts out a big torrent each year of the bands at the show.  They add up to about 17 GB of mp3s.

@skrutop: Awesome! will check it out when opportunity strikes.

How about Arcade Fire? Sigur Ros? The Raconteurs? The last one you probably know (maybe all) but they are all pretty good, modern bands.

@Bruce: I agree with Beirut. It's some great music.

Hmm, I was going to say Decemberists... I just started listening to Company of Thieves and they're pretty good. Animal Collective and  the Black Keys are great too.

OASIS!!! You had to have lived in a cave for like the last 20 years not to have heard any of there songs but yeah, always a great band, they're fucking amazing. Live Forever is the greatest song ever written.
