@imsh_pl: Was your credit card used? No, so cool your jets hot shot. Until there is confirmation that those credit cards are being used en mass by LulzSec there's no reason for any of you to be pissed.

So if someone steals your TV but hands it to a third person you are not pissed at the guy who stole it? Good lord ... some people just don't get it.

Also, did you read lulzsecs twitter feed about three days ago when lulzsec released 60k+ random accounts? People were bragging about how they got their hands on WoW-accounts, pornsite-accounts etc using lulzsecs data dump and lulzsec retweeted some of them.

You're not caught in anything. I'm really surprised that so many gamers are upset by this. Why, because they shutdown PSN for a month? Really, you're pissed because of that?
You're not? Tell me, what do gamers have to do with corrupt governments? What does taking away a gaming service for a month (from a big chunk of your supporters, mind you) achieve in the battle for free speech? How does releasing private password and login data help in making the internet less government controlled? What good for the battle of more internet privacy does stealing 70,000,000 credit card numbers achieve? If Anonymous/Lulzsec wanted to find/release corrupt government data, they would do just that. Fucking with the people whose privacy you're claiming to defend is bullshit.

The PSN attack happened because the hacking collective were interested in defending the rights of people which Sony sought to subvert when they issued illegal subpeonas and got away with it.

So the few outweigh the many?

@ashriels

Al Qaeda in Iraq learned that lesson the hard way. It was cool with the Iraqis when Al Qaeda would attack Coalition Forces (read me), but when they started injuring the Iraqis with the attacks, the Iraqis turned on them.

Steal from the rich and give to the poor. You know what the makes you? A thief. A noble thief, but still just a thief.

There was no tangible theft though. You and I both know that. And you cannot equate the copying of your personal data to stealing physical property you paid money for. After the hacking of your data you lost... nothing. You have all your data, all your money and these companies even refunded you for services lost. This organization is not taking and selling your credit card numbers on the black market, you were not the target.

What about the people who paid for their WoW-accounts, pornsite-accounts or whatever and can't use them? Even if only temporarily ...

It's theft. Period.

If someone steals your actual credit card and doesn't use it, he has still stolen it.

This is a fight they cannot win.

The great thing about being a hacker, if you're really good at what you do, the "man" will try to hire you. And pay you good money to secure their networks, rather than bust them open.

As soon as they are considered domestic terrorists for cyber attacks it will be over quicker than you think.

I think you overestimate HomeLAN Security and underestimate the abilities of a decent hacker.

Hell, there are plenty of free web based proxies available that would throw any Government off for months.

I think you are seriously underestimating the US Government.

You know what the NSA is right?

In 2004, NSA Central Security Service and the National Cyber Security Division of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agreed to expand NSA Centers of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education Program.

As part of the National Security Presidential Directive 54/Homeland Security Presidential Directive 23 (NSPD 54), signed on January 8, 2008 by President Bush, the NSA became the lead agency to monitor and protect all of the federal government's computer networks from cyber-terrorism. In 2010, Robert Gates called for DHS to have a "cell" that would be able to apply the full surveillance powers of NSA for domestic cyber security.

Transaction data mining

NSA is reported to use its computing capability to analyze "transactional" data that it regularly acquires from other government agencies, which gather it under their own jurisdictional authorities. As part of this effort, NSA now monitors huge volumes of records of domestic emails and Internet searches as well as bank transfers, credit-card transactions and travel and telephone records, according to current and former intelligence officials interviewed by the Wall Street Journal.

Nothing will happen because guess what. I can access YouTube, WikiPedia, Giantbomb, Porn.  I don't need anything else in my internet and I think 99% of the internet users just use Facebook, Twitter, Online Gaming and a few hobby/infomation sites. No one else gives a shit about hacking anything or trying to change anything.

Unfortunately if these companies have their way, Internet Access will not be equal any more and you would have to pay for access to individual websites, much like cable television.  5 dollars a month for youtube, 10 dollars a month for wikipedia, 20 dollars for pornography, etc etc etc.  Whether or not you want to fight is your call, but this war applies to absolutely everyone on this planet.  :)
Well if that happens I'll stop using the internet, which I don't really like the sound of but that outcome will probably be great for a lot of people. I'd have to start reading books and magazines again, which actually sounds pretty cool. Life was better in 2000 when barely anyone had internet, at least it was for me.

There will always be an 'underground' internet that houses everything under the sun. That's what makes the medium so beautiful and disgusting.

I hope you have some evidence to support that theory.

And please, no "everyone knows that" or "you're just misinformed" or "you clearly know nothing about the current state of internet" bullshit. You can call me incompetent, but unless I see some evidence for your "individual sites are gonna have individual subscriptions" theory I just don't see any reason to believe it.

Why should I believe that?

Have Lulzsec/Anonymous ever got their hands on/released corrupt government info?

Have they ever done something to protect the freedom of speech and/or privacy (other than getting their hands on 70,000,000 credit card numbers and god knows how many passwords/logins)?

Because so far it appears to me that some hacker teens with a messiah complex have stolen and maybe even published/sold/traded confidential information belonging to millions of users around the world. And apparently by claiming 'It's cool, we just wanna defend your privacy and freedom of speech' some people started to believe that these hackers are on the average Joe's side.

Critics suggest this is one possible outcome if net neutrality is removed. Ashriels is not making that idea up.

But...

I, too, am curious as to how Ashriels can claim to know no information has been sold. See, here's the thing. If someone makes a copy of the key to my front door and sells that key to thieves, that is actually theft. That is actually indefensible.

This seems to be a PR move. Lately a lot of people have been exposing them for the extortionists that they are. They steal information, blackmail people, and threaten them and their families with violence. Their image has gotten so bad that they decided to put on their shining armour and go on a crusade for freedom.

These lackwit fucktards seriously need to die.

This won't end well for them. I get what they are trying to do, but I wonder how far they are willing to go to really advance their cause. My guess is, once the arrests start happening, a vast segment of them will go dark and stay that way.

Actually, I don't have a problem with them trying to uncover corruption - but if you're going to do it, why tell the world that you are going to do it? You'll just encourage the government to spy on you more. You don't inform your enemies that you are going to hack them first. That's just stupid with a capital S.

Lulzsec exposed

I just love watching that and seeing what has happened in this ridiculous "hacker war".

It kinda feels like Lulzsec/Antisec is about to fall, though, considering their whole team has been uncovered.

Also, Antisec graffiti, now they are polluting the real world as well...

@ashriels: You should also point out that Virgin Phone and Internet believes Net Neutrality to be "a load of bollocks". This is a very real issue.

YEAH! Let's fucking HACK!

oh wait, no...sorry

Also, this is just like Dragon Age 2 with the templars and mages. the harder they push, the harder they'll get pushed back. If they actually succeed with anything the "freedom" of the internet is just gonna be weakened even more. Stupid. (Nice game reference huh?)

By law, ISPs control the pipes, they do not control the data in those pipes.  Virgin Media's stance on Net Neutrality is harmful and very much like AT&T's stance.

This is the biggest issue I see. It's kinda disturbing to see these companies act like they should somehow be in control of internet content. It's like a phone company thinking they get to decide who you can call.

Websites like Giant Bomb gave power to these morons with all the coverage they did. Hell Patrick practically cheered them on with all the Sony bashing he was doing. No company is safe from hacking if the hackers have enough resources. Im not saying Sony had the best security they could have had, but this shit got way overblown and it gave these fools media attention that they shouldn't have had. Hell they have PR people working for them.

Allow me a conspiracy theory moment, please.

I got on a mailing list, it's for like petitions and stuff and I usually ignore it, but a while back there was some bill being submitted which would make file sharing (torrents) not only illegal but also censor the internet. It was delayed to be reworded and it came up again recently. My thought is this: what if the government is hiring hackers or they have their own people hacking sites to make it a big deal and get support for bills like this to be passed through without any conflict? It would be a perfect way to start censoring the internet and making the country more China like while in the meantime China is on record (forget where) about hiring hackers to fight enemies or something like that. Maybe America is corrupt and we're heading for a dictatorship, maybe we've decided to fight fire with fire, or maybe I'm just watching too much X-Files right now but it was something to think about.

Regardless of it  being intentional or not.  The result might end up being the same....While perhaps not as bad as you are imagining, all this actions mean that people have the excuse to create restrictions now.  People will be right behind them saying that they want to be more " secure", and that anyone that is not secure enough is simply foolish.  ( reminds me on that bear episode from the Simpsons )
