In terms of games definitely Pokemon, in terms of Anime Digimon in Particular the early seasons. Pokemon as an anime has been stale and repetitious for a very long time. The first season was brilliant, I never really played any Digimon games I don't think.
POKEMON OR DIGIMON?!!!
Yo dawg.
I also fucking adored that Digimon World game when I was a kid. I'm not particularly interested in either anymore, but my childhood nostalgia has aligned itself with Digimon, even though I did enjoy Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow a lot as well.
You know what, I like Digimon better. I remember following the 3 seasons closely and I thought they were all really good. Pokemon was a blur to me back then.

Games: Pokemon
Anime: Digimon
I'm going to have to go with this.
I actually played the most recent Digimon game (Digimon World Dusk) and it was okay and had some neat contributions to the "catch and fight monsters" RPG style, but it wasn't the most compelling. Also, it required a crapton of grinding for the postgame content and I just gave up at that point.
I love me some Pokemon and I was originally a Pokemon kid. I caught the original 150 and I still play to this day. BUT Digimon wins on all counts except one.
First the anime is much better. The first season is amazing and deals with some heavy ass issues for a kids show. You have kids dealing with divorce, a kid find out they were adopted and lied to, and multiple instances of them dealing with life and death. The second season is still fantastic but was incomplete. They had to drop their "Cthulhu" subplot some of which can still be seen in the show. That show basically takes a 180 degree turn at it's ending. What they were building seemed to be amazing. Also the third season is great especially when you realize it is basically Evangelion for Kids but they didn't really tone it down that much as what happens with Juri is still nightmare inducing. Also the 5th season is not bad but was butchered with the dub.
Digimon wins in the game category for me too. Sure the pokemon games are fantastic and are 75% of the reason I and a large chunk of the world own handhelds in the first place. But the original Digimon World is my favorite game of all time and I'm also thoroughly convinced it is one of the best games ever made period. Sure it's kind of buggy as hell but it's still the game I return to pretty much annually and I never get tired of it. It's basically tamagotchi + rpg which should sound amazing to any child of the 90's.
The only place were pokemon wins to me is in manga. As Pokemon Special is amazing. It is basically a retelling of the stories in the pokemon games with the kind of tone the first season of Digimon as they are not afraid to deal with subjects like pokemon death. Words just can't do justice to Pokemon Special. It is basically everything you have ever wanted in Pokemon. On a side note Digimon Adventure V-Tamer01 is also very good just not as good.
The Digimon cartoons are far superior to the Pokemon ones. Hell, I even like the American Digimon Adventures opening theme song. As for games, I really can't say since I've never played a Digimon game and have only rudimentary experience with Pokemon. Oh, and I've never owned a single CCG card of either.
Due to my limited familiarity with both franchises, I have to go with Digimon. I just like the 'toons even today.
And, as stated by other above me, Hell yeah Monster Rancher!
Digimans all the way on the anime aspect. The story in Digimon was generally a lot more sophisticated than Pokemon, though sometimes very dark as well. I also just really liked a lot of the designs in Digimon, some managing to be unbearably cute, and others incredibly rad. As for the games, the Pokemon series honestly has a more solid formula, and even the offshoots are good, while Digimon games are a little hit or miss. Nonetheless, I think I still like Digimon the most.
I'd say I'm split, because they both have their strengths and weakness. Anime is Digimon hands down and anyone who says otherwise is a fucking lunatic. Games is Pokemon, but there are still some great Digimon games out there. I've never read a Digimon manga, but the Pokemon ones are pretty cool up to a point. Shit like people using Pokemon for murder was pretty mind-blowing when I first read it. Design wise I think both go off the rails a lot, but Pokemon is classic. Some Digimon stuff is super bad-ass to my 13-year-old self, though.
Digimon was a great show. Loved it, the monster designs were amazing. The first few pokemon games were also awesome. But they have become repetitive, and the show was the same. Do we REALLY need to hear team rockets song every god damn time?
@tarsier I'm not even close to an anime nerd. I watched dragon ball z and gt. that's about as far as I went. So I'm offended good sir. Really hurt my feelings.

Why isn't Chinpokomon on this list? My favs were Roostor and Shoe.
What!? Pengin's the best. PENGIN FOR LIFE!
Let me put it this way, Digimon made me write a fan fic which combines Digimon and Power Rangers. I thought it was cool. Yes I am aware my fan fic was shit.
The Pokemon games are still pretty great, if a little iterative.
The anime was absolutely awful though. Even for a kids show, it lacks any kind of tension, drama, character progression or even personality. If it retained the fun and adventure of the first episode, that wouldn't be a big deal, but it's just flat out one of the worst shows I've ever seen.
When i was a kid i really liked Digimon better. It felt more actiony and more "adult". I really liked the 2 first seasons of both shows. But both of them simply got repetive and boring after 2-3 seasons.
I like how Digimon can talk and behave more like humanoids then animals, the pokemon just acts like animals but in a world where no pokemon ever is food or anything.
I would like pokemon a lot more if it its own universe more seriously, like show pokemon dying. Or humans eating Taurus meat. You know something like that.
Neither. Monster Rancher. Assuming we're talking games.
Forget that. Cartoons too. The one episode I saw of the it had an even more sexualized and still naked (except for strategicly placed fur) Pixie fighting a Joker with a bloodied scythe.
I used to nerd rage whenever people said "oh it's just a copy of pokemon."
Now... I STILL NERD RAGE fuck you guys
I didn't care for games when I was a young lad, so the shows are my only point of reference. I loved both, but Digimon always seemed a little darker and more adult to me. Thinking back on it, I might even still enjoy it today. Dinosaurs with guns and whatnot.
God damn it. Now I'm going to rewatch Digimon. Anyone know if it's available in a handy streaming format? Netflix or something?

Well sir I have the perfect manga for you. Pokemon Special or Pokemon Adventures depending on where you are is exactly that. At a point an Abrok is chopped cleanly in half. Trainers attack each other directly with their pokemon on a fairly frequent basis. Also people eating pokemon has always been an understated part of the series but it's a thing. The pokemon Farfetch'd is endanger because it tastes so good that people ate them all. Even in the episode of the show with Farfetch'd was all about how Team Rocket wanted to eat Farfetch'd.
@Ryuku_Ryosake: I did read it for a while but the site i used for reading it has terrible scans after a while.
So for now its on hold untill i can start buying it. You are right it is a really good version of the Pokemon setting.
Kind of wish they make an anime based on that manga instead of continuing with Ash.
