I've only watched 3 movies with him in it (Tropic Thunder, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Ironman), so i don't claim to be a movie expert. I only really liked him in Tropic Thunder. I can't quite place what it is... it's just he always comes off as boring and bland. any thoughts?
Robert Downey Jr. - I don't get him
Hrm, I've felt the opposite about the performances i've seen him in (did a great job in Good Night, Good Luck as well). I love watching him act, because as with most great actors he has a certain way about him, no matter what character he is playing. He's going to be excellent in Sherlock Holmes

He hit a peak before his more recent return and then his life went to shit due to drug abuse. He's managed to turn his life around again and seems to be doing better than ever imo. Ironman was pretty good, if overshadowed by TDK, and I enjoyed him in Tropic Thunder -- not many people could have taken that role quite so well I think. Another recent one worth check up is The Soloist starring Robert Downey Jr. alongside Jamie Foxx, some fantastic performances from both actors in that film. I would consider him as a good actor. Not the best, but I have never seen him give a necessarily bad performance.
Boring and bland?? We must be seeing different movies because I think he's a good and sometimes great actor. His role in Ironman was especially great.
The thing I like about RDJ is that he has that slight spark of danger to him, like he's a bit of a loose cannon. The fact that he brings this across in his acting (which is pretty good, too) certainly helps his appeal.
@addictedtopinescent: *feigning bored look* Rachel McAdams doesn't interest me in the slightest... *turning away while biting knuckle*
I've enjoyed RDJ in every movie i've seen him in even if the movie surrounding him wasn't much good.
"...The Soloist starring Robert Downey Jr. alongside Jamie Foxx, some fantastic performances from both actors in that film... "This
Yes, you're right, he's always been "just another actor" that you might like or dislike. nothing special about him. he just existed to play insignificent supporting roles in stupid ass family flicks from the 90s and shit like that... what do i base my statement on? about 5 movies ive "seen" where he was just.. "around" lol, and the fact that ive never heard of any of his roles as big or important
THEN !!!
Iron Man.. BOOM! Tropic Thunder.. ULTRA BOOM! he turned out to be talented, charismatic and hilarious.. it just seems like took him ages to get this new explosive image and im happy for him. his "black" performance in Tropic Thunder was stunningly funny
i could be wrong and maybe he has played great roles in the past, but those are my 2 cents

Watch chaplin and call him boring and bland.
He was hilarious in Black and White. Getting beat up by Mike Tyson. Best thing in that movie, which was pretty shit.
Years ago I has this awesome, huge down pillow that I called Robert Downey Pillow and my buddies and I were up all night drinking and I ended up vomiting all over it. Thinking back on it it was a super creepy name for a pillow.
I've seen a lot of his movies and actually really enjoy his acting. Oh yeah... he is really attractive too. To each their own, though.
I love RBJ!! He is always entertaining in whatever I see him in. Good Night, Good Luck, Zodiac, A Scanner Darkly, then the recent one-two punch of Iron Man and Tropic Thunder. The former showed that he can be badass asshole with a hidden good side and the latter showed that he was a hilarious mofo. Then The Soloist came by this year. The movie wasn't perfect but there were great performances by the two lead actors (him and Jamie Foxx).
" @lilburtonboy7489 said:you guys are retarded." His best movie is "A Scanner Darkly". "Was waiting for someone to say that, and I agree completely.
"

Anyways, Robert Downey Jr. was good in A Scanner Darkly.
