A crawl at 50kbs.  That made me laugh.  Mine runs at 3kbs on a good day.

http://speedtest.net/

I'm running (on average) 1.15 mb/s down & .37 mb/s up.  Not great, not all that good in fact, but functional.  Sadly where I live, there aren't a lot of options, so I have to make do with what's available.

There is the possibility that you are being throttled by your ISP.

Check out Speedtest.net as PenguinDust said. It works really well.

I just got 13.08Mb/s down (wish that was my average though. as thats only 8.7Mb/s down) and 1.79Mb/s up.

Do you have your cable split anywhere or anything?

Piratebay downloads going on?

You should call your phone company if it persists.

This is on a good day.  When my limit is reached, usually in 7 days of the month, I go to dial-up.

In a tiny little rural district in the north-west of Tasmania.  I have satellite as a landline will not be brought out to me.

Slow broadband is the price you pay when you want a view like this from your bedroom balcony.

I can live with it.

The government is setting up a new broadband system that promises 100Mbs.  Our state is the first in line.  Who knows, things could change.

After seeing oldschool's transfer rate, I don't feel so bad anymore.  I cried because I had no shoes until I met a man who had no feet, as they say.  Hang in there, mate.

Perhaps more people in your area have signed up to your ISP. You share your speed with people in your immediate locality, so if lots of people in your area are online at the same time, your speed will take a hit.
