Poll What do you think of Geraldo Rivera? (91 votes)
I personally think he's a misunderstood hero. Why would I think such a thing about a Fox News reporter who's infamous for idiotically giving away the position of our secret desert military base during the Gulf War? The answer is simple: Willowbrook.
Many of you will have to ask your parents what this means, but here's a brief synopsis from a presentation I gave 10 years ago in my High School Spanish class: In 1970 a reporter named Geraldo Rivera along with a camera crew broke into Willowbrook State Sanitarium in New York. What they found could only be described as some deep down layer of hell filled with forgotten or discarded people. The residents of Willowbrook, many of them young children, were in the dark; naked; covered in feces; sick from malnutrition and starvation; had no place to sit; were virtually unattended to; and most of the time they were locked up in a cell not even fit for an animal. These people, the salt of the earth, would have continued to suffer, just because they could not speak for themselves, if it wasn't for Geraldo Rivera exposing Willowbrook's crimes to the public.
Geraldo's story lead immediately to reforms in the New York State sanitarium system as well as the eventual closing of Willowbrook in January 1987 and the horrific Craig State in October 1989.
That is my 2 cents on Geraldo. What do you think of the man?
