Especially if it's a foreign language. We can all guess what "smith" or "cooke" would be derived from, but what about those of us without profoundly English identities?
You don't even have to post your last name if you don't want to, just a translation.
Mine is Gaelic in origin, and happens to mean "helmet head" or "ugly head". Supposedly because my ancestors were some of the first to wear metal helmets into battle against the Vikings.
What does your last name mean?
To show disdain for authority, apparently.
But I aint saying the name. (It's not hard to find me online)
I think it tastes like piss with grape juice in it. I'm more of a Sam Adams or rum kinda guy. /shrug
Mine has three possible origins: Irish, English, or Polish Jew. I'll let you guess to which nationality I belong (hint: it's the least obvious of the three). If I said what it means, well, that would give away what the name is...
"Elens" doesn't really mean anything. It was "Elenzkof" back when my ancestors were living in Austria and Luxembourg. I don't know if that means anything, though.
Andersson translated would be "son of Andrew" or some variation.
Suponitsky has something to do with soup, I would assume. Then again, I'm usually wrong.
My last name is Slovenian, and is derived from the word Bursa, which is a type of mold that grows on wine.

Surname: Goodger
This interesting and unusual name is a late development of the early Medieval English surname perhaps more familiar as "Goodyear" or "Goodyer". The surname is a good example of that medieval group of names originating in a commonly used phrase, often beginning with the element "good", in Middle English "gode", from the Old English pre 7th Century "god", which was taken up as a byname or nickname and thence eventually a surname, because of the habitual use of the phrase by someone. Other examples are Goodsir, Gooday, Goodby, Goodchap and Gooden, respectively from use of the pharases "Good sir", "Good day", "God be with you", "Good ch(e)ap" (a trader's call), and "Good evening" (God give you good even).
My last name has been distorted so many times I don't know what it means, all I know is that it was changed from a Polish or Austrian name to an Irish sounding name since my ancestors on my dad's side came to America during the first World War. My Mother's maiden name means "of the woodlands" though.
