Solid Snake is a cool as ice bad ass and sadly not enough games were made while Snake was in his youth. Whoever that old grampa was in MGS4 is absolutely nothing like the Solid Snake I know.
Yup. Snake was oficially the first time I felt a video game character was a true badass. Granted I was in highschool back then ... anyways! Snake is my favorite as well.
For straight up NPC characters, I would say Garrus from Mass Effect. He was my bro and it really got me in the end when I said "There's no Shepard without Vakkarian." cause it's totally true, especially with how I played those games. I don't think he was ever not on my go-to team. 1st game - Shep, Garrus, Kaidan / 2nd Game - Shep, Garrus, Samara / 3rd Game - Shep, Garrus, Kaidan.
For characters that I have played, I would probably have to go with Princess Peach from Super Mario Bros 2 with her siiiiick floaty jump. I know it's super specific, but I like her less in other games where she is just the damsel in distress pressing Mario on. In 2 she was her own lady, pulling turnips and floaty jumpin' over shiat.
I have been playing games for a long time. From Nintendo to N64 and even today with the PS3. Over that time I've enjoyed many great games and memorable characters.
Vincent from FF7, was my first favorite character. Now, after playing Far Cry 3, I think my favorite is Vaas.
