We already know. JK is making a social site, so Social Gaming. And by that I mean a game to played while pooping. Seems about right, just sad that I won't be able to wipe my arse with it.
I'm sure they will try to build an expanded universe around the HP world built around the books like they did with Star Wars after the origional movies ended and people were dying for more Star Wars. If it will be any good or not it's hard to say. If they get the right people and take the time to craft good stories then it could be great. Or it could just be a cheap cash in like so many things are these days.
I see it going down the path of LOTR if the author allows it to. If she opens it up and allows people to add to the actual cannon, much like lucas for Star Wars, I can bet a ton of money that we will see a lot of alternate storylines and games to go with it.
We can only hope that at some point down the road Warner Bros. and/or EA allow a team to come up with an original story and some interesting gameplay. There is definitely a cool universe there to explore gamewise. The problem is that no one has really had the time or been allowed to explore it, but now that the books and movies are over new devs are going to need to come up with new stories and hooks in their game to sell it. We have seen LotR go this direction, so I am sure HP will do the same.
Also, I dont agree with your premise at all. The Harry Potter might sell all right, but there is no way it will sell like COD. It might break into top ten (or five?) in the NPD, and it will make the money put into that project back and more, but it will not be even as close to as successful as you think OP.
It would be great if they actually gave it to a good studio to do their own thing with it. They could have you go through school as a wizard, maybe not even at Hogwarts, and then on to work at the Ministry of Magic or wherever else. I was never a huge fan of the books or movies, but a full fledged RPG set in the Harry Potter universe could be very interesting.
@MatPaget: I played those and I agree, but realistically the games will go the way of the movie, at least for now. Give it a few years, perhaps the books will be revisited as source material then.
@TaliciaDragonsong: Maybe one day they'll get a proper video game adaptation? Who knows! It's just going to be weird not hearing about Harry Potter so much!
