Why are people mean on other gaming forums?

I recently started a topic on another popular gaming forum. I was then answered by about 30 people telling me that the question I had asked was "old" and to stop filling the forum with useless stuff. Personally I do have time to sit and troll forums looking for every single answer and all I was looking for was a simple answer. Surely I would have taken more time and energy to get angry and write a rude response than to actually answer the question. Why do people feel any need whatsoever to rude or dismissive just because someone does not know something that they do. Anyway, sorry to invade your day with my rant.

This forum isn't much better, the mods are good enough to lock and delete the riff raff (you) before they start trouble.

Because us old guys who got tired of being mean on other gaming forums all came here. No rhyme or reason to it, just happened.

Cause it's fun. Also I find that google can answer 99% of all questions, or at least the stupid ones that get you booed.

This question is olde and you shouldn't be filling forums with this crap.

The anonymity of the internet really lets out the dick in people and it keeps people from realising that when they're being a dick, they're being a dick to a real human being. This is also coupled with the fact that it's generally taken as socially acceptable to be a dick on the internet and even people who disagree with that view rarely oppose it that actively. Fortunately, while these forums certainly are not perfect people here are generally friendlier than elsewhere.

well something to bear in mind is this is a relatively small community. increase numbers and you get the scum of the earth *cough* gamespot system wars board *cough*

In real life, who the fuck goes up to someone's face just to tell them "Hey, I have a problem with you." with no real outstanding reason other than they are different or think differently to how you do? 
 
I guess people such as racists and degenerates might do this, but everyone else keeps their head down and keeps themselves to themselves. Why? In real life, they aren't anonymous but on the internet you have anonymity and for this reason they grief people without worrying about getting anything back in return.  
 
Kinda sucks that anonymity is both one of the best and worst things about the internet, but there you go, rant over.

I think it's because this community fosters open discussion and doesnt tend to be over judgemental.
 
I'm not saying there are no dicks here, there are, but possibly because of the kind of people this site attracts, there just tends to be nicer people here. Plus the community here is smaller. A lot of older gaming forums have been around longer so theres more people (more litle kids) and stricter rules so more tight ass users.

It's the internet, meaning that anybody, no matter how insignificant they are in real life, is able to talk all the shit that they want. Although I suppose that doesn't explain why people here aren't as bad about it. Oh well, GiantBomb for the fuckin' win.

The larger a community you have, the more assholes you get to deal with. Giant Bomb has its sure of less than desirable members; however, due to the smaller size of the website, there aren't that many dicks here.

It's the internet in general, giving village idiots & people you just don't want to know what they're thinking a voice for years. I just think that the forums here have slightly more refinied capabilities, that or the people you saw on the other site are quieter.

When you frequent a forum all the time, it gets really annoying seeing people asking the same question when they could just spend 1 second using the search function to see if the question is already answered. Thats usually why. We do it too sometimes, though usually we just do random shit in the dumb threads.

People here are mean too, take me for example.

When people are mean to you it usually means that there life sucks.  Take comfort in the fact that you have a better life than them and move on.

Internet Anonymity, thats pretty much it.
