Honestly it just irritates me most of the times I've checked it out so I don't go back but I wouldn't go so far as to say hate. Except all the fucking memes. Good lord I'm tired of all that shit.
Why do People Hate Reddit?
I like reddit and I use it quite often but even I have to say its a huge circle jerk. Its a very atheist, liberal, and nostalgia gaming oriented site, I personally fall into all those categories but its plain to see how someone could hate it. If I was republican and wanted to argue against people about (for this example) the healthcare law, I would more likely get downvoted than someone speaking in favor of it.
Also: Memes on the site are fucking stupid and should burn in a fire along with the people who posted their shit memes.
The whole karma system just broken and shows how retarded people can get in pursuit for magical internet points. And i also hate it for all that "class" bullshit that community adopted. You are just some stunent, there is nothing classy about you, stop this fucking act.
Reddit is fine as a news source on some really obscure things, but i'd never discuss anything in that shithole.
@EuanDewar: Yes forgot to add that, some deeply disturbing subreddits that seemingly aren't policed at all.
Well, to be fair that openness and freedom to post whatever shy of things that are actually illegal (i.e. Child Porn) is kind of the principals the site was founded on. Like with any freedom of speech or expression there is going to be people who really take things to the extremes.
On the flip side of this there have been some genuinely touching stories come out of reddit of overly generous and nice people helping fellow redditors out. I saw one a few months back where people helped touch up a photo for a couple who's son had died of some form of cancer. There is as much good as bad on there.
Has anyone else noticed a disproportionately large amount of necro-threads since the redesign, especially recently?

obviously those first two are extremely NSFW.
Also, the reddit userbase threw a hissy-fit when they took down some child pornography subreddits claiming it was a violation of "free speech."
And now you know. People are scum.
That's like saying you're going to ignore Giant Bomb because it has a page dedicated to RapeLay.
Wow really? I'm out of here...
Everyone knows Sexy Beach Zero > Rapelay anyways. Pfffffft.

Oh come on, Artificial Academy is way better than Sexy Beach. That's what I heard from a friend of mine... yeah...
Reddit was great 6 years ago.
Eternal september has slowly ruined it, as it does all internet communities. Average age, education level, and overall level of discourse has gone down year after year. It started with Ron Paul and the digg influx and it's been downhill ever since.
There was a time when Reddit was a great resource full of long form thoughtful articles and programming content, essentially a less neckbeardy slashdot.
it started with ron paul, what the fuck? LOL
Whatever. Just let people be crazy. Reddit has a lot of intresting or funny shit, just like 4chan. You just have to accept that stuff like that won't be the majority and that the free nature of the sites will allow some downright offensive things. My solution is to never visit either site and just cherry pick cool stuff that gets spread out to other sites FROM Reddit.
At the very least, 4Chan is self-aware enough to know that they're scum. They embrace it. Reddit on the other hand is infested with all kinds of Unwarranted Self Importance.
I don't really like it because it is only one step away from being 4chan, and in some cases it might be a little worse (if that is even possible).
Also, the design is confusing as fuck, but with a site that huge I can kind of understand why.
I just started viewing reddit recently and I do enjoy all the cool pictures of stuff and stories.
I definately find it grating with all the memes, animal pictures, try hard comments, people trying to get karma, and of course some of the subreddits which are fucking disgusting.
It's fine for just looking at the first few pages while I'm bored, I don't want to get too involved with it though.

I think we all have our answer now. This thread is finished.
As a redditor, I can confirm that such boards are absolutely deplorable. Unfortunately, there are a lot of smaller subreddits--and most of the defaults--that ruin the fun for everyone else on the site; while the boards listed above, /r/cringe's community (the content itself's not too bad, actually), /r/Atheism, and several other subreddits are pure cancer, others are great and appeal to whichever interests you have. Honestly, I kind of wish boards like the ones kaiserreich listed could be taken down, but since they can't, we might as well try to ignore them and go on our way.
As far as the decreasing age of redditors and the constant circlejerkery, this is all true... On defaults. As is the case with any internet community, the bigger the community, the more prone it is to younger members, immaturity, close-mindedness, circlejerkery, etc. This is MUCH better with smaller boards, though.
Admittedly, the karma system is a bit of a mess that focuses more on the user's popularity with the post than the content within. Fortunately, some subreddits have begun hiding comment karma (the real problem here) for at least an hour, preventing people from bandwagon voting. Boards that don't have this issue typically don't get as much into the popularity of the post (not always true, but still).
TL;DR: Reddit's definitely got problems and I understand why outsiders hate it so much, but most of these problems lie in the bigger groups. As for the others... well, no site's perfect, I guess.
It is the same reason why so many people like to talk shit about Call of Duty. Not because it is BAD, because it is cool to hate the super popular thing.
reddit is so huge that it can run a meme into the ground in less than a day
CoD does actually suck.
Reddit is nothing but a hivemind. The shit people say just to get virtual internet points is fucking crazy and sad. It's sad because if you break out of that hivemind way of thinking, everything you post will get downvoted into oblivion and no one will ever see what you have to say.
I try my damnedest to stay out of the "mainstream" reddits and go to things like, I don't know, Mass Effect or MGS related content. Shit I know. Shit I know people won't be stupid in. It's also a good way to keep up on information about those specific departments. But you'll still find stupid karma whore bullshit that makes you wonder why these people need to be validated by strangers on the internet, you'll find that anywhere.
And don't even get me started on their fucking "memes". Hey guys here's a picture of a table, GOOD GUY TABLE THANKS FOR KEEPING MY FOOD OFF THE FLOOR HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
It's not funny. None of their memes are funny, and the ones that are came from 4chan anyway.
This man speaks the truth. Memes are almost never funny by the way if I say so myself.
I've got nothing against Reddit, the memes can be obnoxious but they're avoidable. I think a lot of it is 4chan elitism and the fact that they kind of think they own the concept of the internet meme, which they kind of in a way do, but they're dumb pictures so who really cares.
I use Reddit to keep track of subreddits that I subscribe to because they're relevant to my interests. Nearly all of these subreddits have board rules that ban quickmeme images and actually post useful information or entertaining content such as news of a new Smash Bros tournament, some well-painted warhammer miniatures or a programming exploit, etc. If you browse r/all then yeah it's full of crap, but if you like a particular topic that interests you, you can just stick to those boards and they tend to be pretty good.
Basically it's like video game forums; ignore the Console Wars board and you can find cool stuff you like.
I really don't like a majority of the community. A bunch of people trying to push garbage posts for the chance at karma points, and people fall right into it. I witnessed reddit's fall from grace. Used to be the posts that got big karma were things that people put legitimate work into instead of "It's my cakeday here's a picture of a cake". The worst part is they're so damn pretentious about it. Seem like every hour someone says "oh man reddit's so much better than <facebook, 9gag, this, that, the other>, it's just much better content and it's not scary and full of creepy pedophile murder junkies like 4chan." Come ON. At least 4chan openly admits they're a bunch of scumbags instead of sitting around masturbating their egos all day.
Hivemind attitude in the main subreddits lead to poor discussion and circlejerk. The best thing to do with Reddit is unsub the defaults and start joining the smaller ones.

Ignoring the fact that this thread is quite old, it disturbs me that Reddit is basically socially acceptable 4chan. Everyone agrees 4chan has some fucked up shit, but not enough people acknowledge that Reddit is more or less the same.
