No that was steam powered, if we are talking MODERN STYLE AUTOMOBILES it'd have to have an internal combustion engine. Try and read into the subject a little more before you try and object.

People seem to have arbitrary factors in determining what counts as the first automobile. But either way, we can be sure it was created in a country that drives on the right side of the road.

Although German engineer Karl Benz, the inventor of numerous car-related technologies, is generally regarded as the inventor of the modern automobile when he received a German patent in 1886, American George B. Selden filed for a patent on May 8, 1879.

"

True. An American was the first to really mass produce them. That's really where the US built all of its economic power, not through its inventions themselves, but figuring out how to manufacture things quickly and efficiently. And now we've reached a point where we produce the inventions in the US, and then ship the cheap and quick manufacturing overseas (I say "cheap" instead of "efficient", because I don't consider forcing droves of people to work for next to nothing to be efficient... not to say that the US never had seedy sweatshops either). We didn't learn very much from history, now did we?

The American way. I guess, again, if arbitrary distinctions are the factor in making something. There's your first patent and the first mass production for public consumption was America. The first vehicle moving on its own happened in France. Any way you slice it, left sided drivers played no part in it. This is what every world empire argument boils down to. Serious stuff.

No way in hell. The EU has not exactly been an outstanding success for Europe: why should we unite the entire world? What good would come out of it? People and nations around the world are unique and all have different ideas on how to govern. Why make some weak centralized government that no one would agree with? Do all of the people that voted yes really think China, North Korea, Russia, and the United States would all get along in a world government? Please, spare me the joke!

But it's not possible. Sitting on the internet and saying "we can all make sacrifices! It will be great!" is one thing.  Actually thinking out what would have to be done for this to work is another. Why don't you be specific: what sacrifices would the United States have to make? What about China? And I ask again, what exactly do we gain by doing this? How does a world government better humanity? Would you model if after the EU?

Agreed... we've really already tried the "weak centralized government" idea with the UN, and it hasn't exactly been a resounding success. The countries that you named don't exactly agree on anything there either. The only way that this hypothetical "United Earth" would be any different from the UN is if it wasn't a "weak" centralized government, but that brings with it a whole host of different problems.

"No way in hell. "
Agreed... we've really already tried the "weak centralized government" idea with the UN, and it hasn't exactly been a resounding success. The countries that you named don't exactly agree on anything there either. The only way that this hypothetical "United Earth" would be any different from the UN is if it wasn't a "weak" centralized government, but that brings with it a whole host of different problems. "
It would be worth it.

They were not.

This is an interesting question.  I think it would take an alien threat for this to happen within the next 100 years.

And any aliens that have the capability to invade Earth would be so far ahead of us technologically that we'd be 100% fucked anyway.

Not until we have someone else to attack  (i.e. Alien warlords) will United Earth be viable. Nations need an "other" to hate or it just doesn't work.

You know so little about the rest of the world. Can't say I'm surprised though "
This is the part where I ask you to post the reasonable factor behind the rest of the world outside of America (the continents) deciding to be different. And you just start trolling more. "
The point he was making is that the rest of the world (save Japan and former British colonies) DOES drive on the right side of the road. Idiots.

the point is to be free, so that everybody can enjoy freedom. US is a good example about that, there are many different people with different cultures living in the same country, take Amish as an example. Also, different laws could be applied to different parts of the world, in the same way laws differ between states, or even more. Obama is trying to change the health system, maybe that change could be done in a single state, if they could decide about those questions.

Now the point is, if every state (previous country) can decide on so many questions, virtually anything, what is the union of them all good for? what's the difference?

I guess it would be nice not to need a passport and not to use different currencies, I like that in Europe.

No. This wouldn't have many benefits that I could think of. There would be just as much war, if not more.

A one world government will not be peaceful as you say, it will be a dictatorship. If there are power players who are the banking elite who gets control, they don't have everyone's interest in mind. There will be no one who can stand up to this. Back then hitler also dreamed of a one world order and it didn't work out. However if it did, you can sort of imagine how it would turn out. It would be like the novel 1984 mixed with V for vendetta.

They already signed a secret agreement that the entire north america will be one country including mexico. The european union is already complete, now they have to join it and create a one world currency. They are going to be in control and I believe in order to keep everyone in line, our banking will be done electronically. We all have to use a chip called an RFID chip or we can't eat or buy stuff. If you go against this one world government, they will simply turn off your chip. Globalisation is the worst thing that can happen because it will overide democracy and also the constitution. I am sure it's not going to be a democracy.
