How far we've come. To go from basic moving white shapes and needing to place physical overlays on the screen to incredibly complex games with realistic physics and graphics that don't work at all
Gaming Pioneer Ralph Baer Passes Away
All game developers and players owe a lot to Mr. Baer, and he'll always be remembered for his massive contributions to the medium. Rest in peace, you wonderful man.
Also, if I'm being honest I was expecting something a little more substantial to be written up about him. Could have at least embedded this video here that was posted in the other thread.
EDIT: Gamespot also has an obituary up that I'd say is more befitting.
Agreed. That Gamespot article is a beautifully-written tribute, and makes this little blurb seem almost shameful by comparison.
In any case, I am glad Patrick has put a news item up about this. R.I.P. Mr. Baer. His invention of the home console set the stage for the huge proliferation of interactive games in our everyday life that we get to enjoy today.
Two days late and three sentences long. Yeah I agree, it does seem kinda flippant. Some indie dev making an iPhone game I'll never play gets 3000 words, Ralph Baer gets this.

Sadly, GOTY has us all beaten 'n tired. I wish I could have given the man a more substantial tribute.
@patrickklepek: It's amazing to think, there might not be this kind of wide-reaching video game industry that necessitates so much effort for GOTY considerations without Ralph Baer's contributions.
I appreciate your candor and response. Keep on keepin' on, Patrick.

Ah truthfully I'm having a bad day at work. I regret being a troll.
@whitegreyblack: I agree. This blurb was shameful.
@patrickklepek: As understandable as that may be, if you had at least taken a glance at the already posted user-made thread it would have given you a charming little video portrait to add to the article.
It is a shame, the man really was a pioneer. Hopefully his legacy will live on through the industry that he helped create.
Also Simon was an awesome.
Already saw a few links here, but this NPR piece is pretty good in my opinion.
Inventor Ralph Baer, The 'Father Of Video Games,' Dies At 92
Awesome guy. Without him we wouldn't be where we are in gaming today and further he actually created some Mask toys I used to have too.
Really sad too that his wife never saw him honoured for his work, but that really shouldn't mean that much as he left his mark on everyone in gaming.
I encourage people to look at the brief inventor portrait embedded from Vimeo, above in the comments.
Sad to see him go.
