The Wolfenstein: The New Order Panzerhund Edition was announced today and it will include the following:

  • An 8 inch fully articulated hand-painted Panzerhund statue and base
  • Classified folder containing salvaged secret war documents including maps, case files, letters, blueprints and an x-ray
  • A set of 14 full-color ‘vintage’ postcards from Wolfenstein’s alternate 1960’s, bound in a display book
  • Three embroidered patches
  • Custom replica dog tags
  • An exclusive Steelbook case to house your copy of the game – Actual game sold separately.

It's important to note, though, that the actual game will be sold separately. That's kind of odd, huh? A Collector's Edition that doesn't come with the game it represents.

It isn't an 'edition' then is it... Addition maybe.

This is dumb and they should feel dumb.
I like me a good collectors edition but I wouldn't pick one up sans the actual frickin' game.

It's stupid to call this an "edition" but I actually kind of like the idea of it.

You could pick up the game and if you ended up really liking it you could by this Collectors Set to get all the stuff in it. I think that's a better alternative to buying a CE off the bat for a game you might end up not liking.

#6 Posted by adoggz (2069 posts) -

So I could just buy the game on steam ,or whatever, and also have the option getting the useless shit in the collectors edition? That's neat I guess.

Are they hoping to trick people? This seems stupid and pointless.

EDIT: Can I at least buy this and get into the Doom Beta?

#8 Posted by probablytuna (3683 posts) -

This is beyond stupid.

#9 Edited by Abendlaender (2812 posts) -

Great. I don't really have any interest in the game, but the CE looks sweet. Fantastic deal for me, hope more people do this.

#10 Posted by JadeGL (883 posts) -

This is kind of weird to me. Do they just not want to sell a proper Collector's Edition with the game included for 160 dollars? Are they trying to pull a fast one on people who don't carefully read the description of the item? I honestly am trying to comprehend why you would sell a CE without the game, and I'm just not finding a good enough reason.

I can understand why someone may buy something like this. Maybe they don't want the game but want the statue/postcards/etc. Still, 100 dollars is a lot to drop without the game being included in the package.

My gut reaction was that this was a dumb idea, but thinking of it as sort of a Collector's Upgrade or something makes more sense. I have often thought it was sort of odd to buy a CE of a game sight-unseen, even if I've done just that for a few. I knew I'd want that Fallout bobble-head and that lunchbox even if Fallout 3 didn't turn out well.

I find the fact that they actually give you an empty case hilarious.

I'm sure in reality it will mostly be sold bundled with the game in stores, its probably just a quirky form distribution.

#13 Posted by Demoskinos (14871 posts) -

This seems scummy beyond belief. Especially if they aren't clearly messaging that you aren't getting the game.

#14 Posted by laserguy (444 posts) -

This is not a bad idea. I can buy this, get the steam copy, or buy the game used later. This makes the collectors edition if you include the game 160.00. Pretty expensive.
They arent releasing the collectors edition until May 20th, the day of release for the game, it would make more sense if they dont include the game to send this out before the games release date to build hype for Wolfenstein.

#15 Edited by Glottery (1293 posts) -

Content looks neat, but the lack of game...yeah. Like mentioned, I sure hope there's a big sticker on the box to say "NO GAME INCLUDED" because I can just imagine the confusion and/or rage when someone goes through all the cool stuff first and then opens the empty case...

You can't sell an edition of a game if it doesn't come with the fucking game. That's not how this works.

Hahaha wait say what

They can just call it the 'gameless' edition.

#19 Edited by AndrewB (7632 posts) -

It's not a edition or an addition. It's merchandising.

The only part that makes it offensive is that one word. The nomenclature/expectations laid out since the dawn of the collector's edition. Otherwise it's at least noted (in the final main paragraph of the description on their website, however) that the pack doesn't include the game.

#20 Posted by BisonHero (6564 posts) -

Are we sure they didn't just forget that it comes with the game?

This collector's edition does not include a copy of the game. Keep your pre-order at your favorite retailer and we'll send you these goodies separately—this way we can ship these boxes worldwide and you're not stuck waiting for your game to come along with an oversized, expensively shipped box.

This is stupid. Beyond stupid.

#24 Posted by Rotnac (773 posts) -

Just caught wind of this silliness via Rorie's twitter.

Still can't wrap my mind around the whole selling of a game case without the game. The only thing missing is the "BEST VALUE" label stamped on somewhere to make it more ridiculous,

#25 Posted by ArbitraryWater (11791 posts) -

This is like a parody, except real.

#26 Posted by Vuud (2012 posts) -

Do people really want all that junk? A nice tin case for the discs is all I want from a collector's edition.

#27 Posted by Turambar (6790 posts) -

It comes with a fancy steel game case. And no game.

This might not be scummy, but it sure is dumb as hell.

#28 Posted by RollingZeppelin (1994 posts) -

Collector's Editions have always been dumb, but this takes it to a whole nother level.

#29 Edited by Veektarius (4865 posts) -

This wouldn't seem so deceptive if the price weren't that high.

#30 Posted by Aetheldod (3593 posts) -

Also agree this is beyond foolish.

#31 Edited by GunslingerPanda (4787 posts) -

Genius. There's no way I'd pay $160 for that now, but what if I buy the game and really, really like it? I would absolutely drop money on this for it.

But calling it an "edition" is dumb. "Collector's Pack" would have been better.

E: Oh, also this: "Keep your pre-order at your favorite retailer and we'll send you these goodies separately—this way we can ship these boxes worldwide and you're not stuck waiting for your game to come along with an oversized, expensively shipped box."

I really don't think this is as insidious as people want to believe it is. The wording is just silly, but the intent behind it seems kind of fine.

#32 Posted by Meptron (1081 posts) -

Definetly weird, but clearly not designed to trick people. This way, you can get the game wherever you like, or digitally, but still get all this junk if you really want it. I agree with everyone who says the naming is weird though.

#33 Posted by Hunkulese (2742 posts) -

Not any worse than regular "collector's editions."

If you have money to burn on that stuff why does anyone else care?

#34 Posted by Petiew (1350 posts) -

What the hell. Did they hire DSP to design this?

#35 Posted by TrafalgarLaw (1132 posts) -

This is the Bethesda-monster you created. They have the gall to not include the game in a $100 package.

so if it has no game wouldn't it be more like a fan kit or something like that?

#38 Posted by phrosen (147 posts) -

Never have the chances been better for Wolfenstein to be sold in Germany.

#39 Posted by WickedFather (1733 posts) -

That beastie looks like that ED-209 boss from Axelay. Now I know what my girlfriend can have for her birthday: Engagement Ring: Special Edition. It's full of relief or dispair, just no ring.

#40 Posted by Iron_Tool (221 posts) -

This is not the first time that a separate collectors pack has been released without the game. It actually makes a lot of business sense since you this pack is platform agnostic so there is no extra production cost to make 3 versions of these pay expensive retailer space for these.

Whoever wants this can order it and slap his gamedisc into the steel case.

#41 Edited by Superfriend (1557 posts) -

So fucking stupid. Guess they wanted the price to be 100 bucks.. desperately?!

Well, I don´t need any of this stuff- the game, maybe.

#42 Posted by chiablo (938 posts) -

This further reinforces my belief that collector's edition should be considered "a fool and his money" edition.

#43 Posted by CornBREDX (5347 posts) -

Hmm... ya that is weird

#44 Posted by BigJeffrey (5021 posts) -

lol just like the Forza one that cost 120

#45 Edited by Zeik (2485 posts) -

That's more money than I would ever spend on something like that, and calling it a collector's edition is misleading, but I don't think there's anything wrong with it not coming with the game. You buy the collector's edition because you want the goodies, not because it comes with the game.

DLC that you can hold in your hands!

#48 Edited by Shortbreadtom (794 posts) -

@gunslingerpanda: I don't know if you can defend their intent when they're charging 100 dollars for a collection of stuff that seems no more impressive than other collectors' editions that are technically only 40 dollars extra.

#49 Edited by OneKillWonder_ (1755 posts) -

This is one of the dumbest things I've seen in awhile. I would actually consider buying it if it came with the game and was still $100, since I am really looking forward to the game and since this stuff looks like it would just barely be worth an extra $40, but a full hundred just for that? WITHOUT THE GAME? Madness, I tell you.

#50 Posted by phantomzxro (1577 posts) -

I could see that maybe but it still seems backwards because collector's editions are very random when it comes to their availability. So buying it after you have and like the games seems like a crap shoot.
