Guilty Gear 2: Overture Review
Guilty Gear 2: Overture is a departure from the famous fighting franchise into a 3D strategy action game. You will be taking control of units and your main characters as you battle through different levels beating up the enemy units and trying to capture different points on a map. You'll also get the chance at a change of pace as you'll be utilizing the sprint mechanic as you try to run through a level.
Graphically this game is an embarrassment to the franchise. The franchise is now for hand drawn characters with a lot of detail. This game gives you grungy 3D rendering of characters. The levels don't have a lot of life to them either. You're going to be quickly wishing that the creators of this game went a different route.
Musically this game doesn't have the same oomph as the franchise is known for. The voice acting, depending on the character, is either passable or something that you really don't want to listen to.
The controls in this game just allows gamers to further see the flaws in this game. The controls are clunky, sometimes almost non-responsive at times. The button combinations feel clunky and lack that fluid movement from the fighting games. The cherry on top for the controls is the run mechanic. You'll be awkwardly trying to hold the left analog pressed while changing directions. If you release on that your character will have to go through a build up again before they are running.
The story, as far as I could understand it was that the Gears are asleep, but something is happening. You are pulled in to try to help the ruling party and run into an individual, not from this world. You'll get the chance to experience things that are outside the laws of magic, and you'll get to take glimpses into the world outside your own. You'll have the chance to run around level after level trying to save your world while commanding your legions to attack, capture, and win the battle.
I think part of the problem stems from the fact that this game really didn't need to be made. I understand that every once in a while you want to go outside the staple genre, but this game lacks the heart and feel of the franchise. I can't recommend this game, even to the most die-hard of fans. This game gets a 2.6 out of 10.
