    Heavy Rain Review 0

In an industry bursting at the seams from obscure genres (take a bow, Rogue-Likes) it can be slightly depressing when a game feels it’s necessary to create another of its own. However, often these risk-taking developers strike gold and Heavy Rain is one of these cases. It is also one of those cases which is ridiculously hard to review without spoiling the story. I won’t reveal any of it here, only that while it stumbles upon the occasional plot hole and misses out large chunks, the game spins a ...

    A flawed gem. 0

As one of the most hyped and well-received cinematic games of 2010, it's easy to expect nothing short of a Stanley-Kubrick-quality tour de force from Heavy Rain. It's admittedly unfair to expect Quantic Dream to release an Oscar-caliber screenplay in the shell of a choose-your-own-adventure video game. But at the same time, for a game that has been so heavily hyped specifically for its characters and storytelling, the reality of playing Heavy Rain can be a little disappointing for those expecti...

Inclement weather has never been so good 0

Heavy Rain is an experience not often found in the gaming world. A gripping narrative unfolds that instills a sense of emotional attachment to the characters, plot, and decisions being made. The feeling of uncertainty and curiosity that accompanies the player throughout the entire journey is something that places Heavy Rain above the average video game. The plot revolves around a serial killer abducting young boys and slowly drowning them over a period of several days. The story is told through t...

A merging between platformer and point-and-click genres. 0

Quantic Dream’s Heavy Rain for the PS3 boasts a unique kind of gameplay: combining platform style navigation with the gameplay mechanics of a point-and-click adventure game. The game’s plot has the player assume the role of various characters all of which are, in one way or another, involved with the case of serial murders committed by a culprit known only as the Origami Killer. The story is broken up into sections, each one being archived and free to be revisited once you have cleared them for...

    Make your own history 0

For some people and even experienced players the game can be a little weird , the way you move  , the action and the search for clues in the crime scene . There are four characters , and the history is divided by chapters  , you change character when you advance to the next chapter , and one of the coolest things in Heavy Rain is that  even little acts can change the whole history and if you die with one character there isn't a  way to go back ,  the character dies and you continue playing with ...

An interesting concept, but the story really has issues 0

Debate about the polarizing "Heavy Rain" often focuses upon whether a game composed largely of quick time events can even be considered a game. Reviewers are so busy either defending or condemning the game's mechanics that few people have had a chance to point out the game's biggest problem – mediocre story and writing. An adventure game like Heavy Rain ultimately flies as high as its fiction. In this case, it's – eh – not all that high. The story isn't the emotionally stirring masterpiece exper...

Heavy Rain is as innovative as it is breathtaking 0

The thing that really drives this game is the storyline. If you have any kind of curiosity, or find yourself drawn to complex yet mysteries plots, you will be drawn in pretty fast. We are talking pretty edge-of-your-seat and pretty heart-pounding, through all but the most apathetic points of the game. Due to the control system, and having to control pretty much every aspect of the characters' lives, we're talking about some pretty run-of-the-mill, taking a shower and shaving, everyday life parts...

    ..... Lost for words. 0

This game I don't know how to say it but its so great even if the Controller mechanic can drive me nods. The store is so good, and it keeps you guessing, and the sound and BG is so good. The characters are outstanding made it really drew me in. Under different circumstances, I would hate this game for the controls alone, but the game was so good that it didn't really matter....

    Heavy Rain 0

I've heard for years about Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls. There's so much admiration for David Cage and his penchant for story telling. Creating emotional connections between the player and the character. I am familiar with his style, finding it totally fascinating but also totally infuriating. I played through Indigo Prophecy (Fahrenheit) twice. I even liked the second half. It almost felt like Cage created a formula with Indigo, and followed it nearly beat for beat with Heavy Rain. Sure, i...

An add-on that completely misses the point 0

Heavy Rain's main strength was the breadth of its story and the time that you spent getting to know the characters. This little bit of DLC has none of that, and is instead a 15 minute sequence featuring Madison's investigation of someone that she suspects of being the Origami Killer. She does this by entering his house and poking her nose where he would rather it wasn't. It manages to pull off a strong atmosphere of its own (a few disturbing and panic-inducing moments) but it feels like it is tr...

    Some weather were havin 0

As the medium of video games mature we will start to see more finely crafted stories, characters, and control schemes. Heavy Rain takes a big step forward toward seeing that future. Heavy Rain takes just about any control style your familiar with a throws it out the window, that doesn't always help the game but it does provide an unquestionably "fresh" experience. The way you interface with Heavy Rain is something that can be very polarizing. The game is usually at a fixed camera angle an...

Take your time, enjoy the sights. It's quick. 0

I know I know….dang Rich, you sure are doing alot of DLC reviews instead of full game reviews lately. Ever since I got back into the 360 mod scene I’ve been playing mucho games, just not enough time to finish them. Anyway, Sony gave away the first Heavy Rain DLC to the cats who pre-ordered the game. I really dig Heavy Rain so I’m taking my time with it and a review will come soon. Here’s my thoughts on Heavy Rain Chonicles 1:The Taxidermist. 8/10 The Good – This chapter pits you in...

PieGuy's Spoiler Free Taxidermist Review 0

Here is my SPOILER FREE review of the first (and only) episode of the Heavy Rain Chronicles. The planned DLC was scrapped it seems in favour of Move technology. The 'Taxid ermist' is about Madison Paige on a journalistic outing to scope out a man she suspects may be the Origami Killer. It plays much like one of the longer chapters within Heavy Rain. I have to say that the length is disappointing considering its price tag. For me the DLC took me approx 20 minutes and that was with me taki...

    Simply unmatched 3

OK let me get some minuses out of the way first: - Kid voice actors were really lame. - Sometimes the characters pick funny direction to walk in until you move your analogue again to where you want to go. That's it. This game was the most gripping and exciting thing I have ever experienced. I just sat through it non-stop, 9 hours of gameplay and literally EVERY scene had me on the edge of my seat or at the very least kept me entertained and the best bit? It was all realistic in it's univ...

THE most important game released on the PS3, maybe this gen 1

Oh, Heavy Rain. You were thrown out as a sign of how video games have matured, and how they can be taken seriously by the average consumer. How well did you deliver on those hopes? Better than I could have imagined or hoped for.  SetupHeavy Rain is a fairly simple game. The player takes control of four different characters throughout the game. They don't have any unique abilities (besides Jayden and his matrix-style ARI), but each one feels different from one another. The main gameplay element...

    If you like mystery 0

I finished it 9 hours after I got the game so yeah I pulled an allnighter. This is my first review so I don't have a real format to do it in.  Lets start with the story, I only played it once so I don't know if anything changes with the ending but I can see how they would do it if there is a change. The story goes with your decisions so its difficult to really answer this, if you like mystery books and movies then why not try a mystery game  Gameplay is exactly what you see in the gameplay video...

So Heavy Rain is pretty damned good. 0

ProsGreat looking, well-developed, interesting characters who are fairly easy to grow attached to.Good soundtrack.Loads of cinematic flair - good use of lighting, camera angles.Unique gameplay.Engaging story. ConsMovement controls can be a little bit wonky.English voice acting isn't always spot on.I'm finding it hard to come up with a lot to say about Heavy Rain, so I'll be brief.I can say I've never played anything like it before.Truth be told there isn't a lot of 'playing' in Heavy Rain.It r...

Does choices better than any other game 0

I have honestly never cared so much about my choices in a video game. Usually killing someone is what you do in just about every playable moment in any other game, but here, you get to know the characters. The main idea isn't to kill everyone in sight; the idea is to make sure nothing happens to one of the four main characters you control. The part of the game to which I am referring is a scene where Ethan Mars (or rather, you) have to chose whether or not to let someone live. I had to pause the...

I want more games like this 0

I really enjoyed this game. It's an achievement in storytelling that they were able to give me a complete story arch that thematically fit together and I have to imagine that that's not just because I was lucky and got the only well-written ending. The gameplay is intense; even when you succeed each little step of the quicktime you dont feel like you succeeded as much as you feel like you avoided dying. The truth may be that its actually quite hard (I played on Normal) to die but thats not how i...

    Not too Shabby 0

I enjoy most games and I especially like to check out games that are doing something different or trying something new for the video game enthusiast.  Heavy Rain does this on several different levels, but the most important part is they make the game/story fun to play.  The story itself is well done for video game standards but is lacking that next level that some games have achieved.  The different paths you can take by your choices or lack of is pretty cool and different than playing ...

A step forward not a giant leap 0

Heavy Rain is a difficult nut to crack. On many levels, the latest Sony exclusive for the Playstation 3, is a breath of fresh air that updates an old game style for today's modern gamers but its not a perfect game by any stretch of the imagination, regardless of what some people would have you believe. Developer Quantic Dream would like you to call Heavy Rain an Interactive Drama, I prefer the term I grew up with when playing games of this sort, Adventure game. It is what Quantic Dream's last g...

    You're So Vain... 0

Heavy Rain, like all video games really, is about illusion.  You are led to believe your choices matter, and fret about each choice, knowing well that you have to choose fast before the game makes a decision for you, but the illusion breaks apart somewhat at the end. In the first third of the game, as you get to know the main 4 characters and the plot threads start, this game is a 5 star game for me, taking the interactive story genre to new heights.  Mundane scenes, where you do very little int...

    Review: Heavy Rain 0

(Read the original review on my blog)   It's ironic that I should be writing about a game featuring the worst virtual weather of this generation while enjoying a beautiful almost-spring day outside. The sun is shining, plants are growing, birds are chirping, dogs are barking, and all of this topped off by two men wielding chainsaws somewhere up the street. Indeed, there is no better way to enjoy the great outdoors like wearing in your brand new power tools. Great job guys. I hope that fallen tre...

    A Dramatic Adventure 0

A few holes don't take away from the fact that Heavy Rain delivers a dramatic plot unlike any interactive entertainment to come before it. The graphics are not to be ignored, and are marred only by clunky walking animation and control. I can not properly review it without drawing at least one parallel to film, that which would be the cameras and set design. It's all very cinematic in it's presentation with just enough interaction to keep the player engaged. Heavy Rain is a narrative adventure th...

Aims high but misses the mark 0

Quantic Dream have increasingly used the term "interactive movie" to describe their design ethos. Sadly Heavy Rain is neither a particularly good movie, nor a game with satisfactory interactivity. In many ways the problems with Heavy Rain's narrative can be found in the films on which it is clearly inspired: the movies Seven and Saw are clearly huge influences on the story and aesthetic design. The players enjoyment of Heavy Rain is therefore dependent on whether they found those movies to be pre...

Heavy Rain, an 'experience' that goes beyond conventional thought 0

Every game is an experience. There are games that every gamer should play if you like FPS, Puzzles, MMO, Action-Adventure etc. etc., and there are a select few that EVERY gamer should play. Welcome in Heavy Rain.Described as an 'Interactive Drama,' Heavy Rain in it's basic concept is a choose your own adventure book, but think with the leaps and bounds that the latest Star Trek movie is compared to the Original Series. The story goes on no-matter what happens, there is no sense of losi...

A Unique Gaming Experience Unlike Anything I've Ever Played 0

Heavy Rain comes to us from Quantic Dream, the same studio that brought us Indigo Prophecy (reviewed here just before Christmas), and it is available on PS3 now. I got my copy on launch day, but have yet to claim my bonus content. I played the demo a month ago and already had my thoughts on it, time to see how the real McCoy stacks up.Just a warning: As the game is so plot-centric, this review will inevitably contain spoilers. First off, I have to mention this: Reading yesterday over at The Sixt...

    Not quite right 0

Someone once said once you've done 90 percent of the work of making a game you've got 90 percent of the work left.  Heavy rain is proof of that addage.  For as close as it comes to creating a sort of interactive mystery-thriller experience small annoyances really eat at the game.      The game really brings the power of the PS3 to bear and creates a pretty cool game world.  And it has you do some pretty mundane things throughout the game.  It begins with the player waking up and having a shower,...

Heavy Rain Takes the Player for a Ride 0

What could easily be described as an interactive drama film Noir, packing an intense punch with it's beautiful stylized graphics, unique player interaction method and a story that will leave you on the edge of your seat till the final curtain has dropped. Brought to you by the fine folks who created Indigo Prophecy, QuanticDream brings a stellar performance to it's roster. Some would call Heavy Rain a life simulator, allowing you to carry out the various everyday actions of the games four char...

A heavy rain that can't be missed 0

Heavy Rain is not the typical game.  You don't collect coins, beat up guys or finish missions.  It calls itself an interactive drama and Quantic Dream are the pioneers to bascially a quck time event based adventure game.  First off i will say i am a huge fan of QuanticDream, their first game of this genre, Indigo Prochecy (or Farenheit as it is called in Europe) was a real fresh and progressive take on the adventure series. Yet the story lacked a solid ending.  Heavy Rain builds on what they lea...

Heavy Rain - Great Experience, Average Game 0

The struggle between video games and movies have raged for years. It seems impossible for filmmakers to adapt video game storylines and characters into a decent film, and video games based on movies are often rushed and unplayable. Heavy Rain is a truly unique experience because it has an extremely cinematic plot and appearance, unlike anything that has been seen before in gaming. Unfortunately, the actual gameplay isn’t as smooth or interesting as the appearance, making Heavy Rain a tough game...

    Heavy Rain Review 0

Heavy Rain is tough to review, since it isn’t exactly a game in the normal sense of the word. The developers tout it as interactive drama, and for the most part that is exactly what it is. I felt I was more an influence for the characters decisions than I was actually playing them. Despite that, there really isn’t anything quite like this out there and it is a harrowing experience, but not in a bad way. You’ll take the reins of mainly four different characters, all with their own motivations to...

    Your Story 0

I'll be honest, when I first started playing this game, I nearly sent it back. The beginning dares you to put it down and do something else.   But then, some part of me decided to give it a legitimate chance. So, I put it back in my PS3 and gave it an hour. Then, I gave it another hour. And then... well, I didn't put it down until it was finished.   The story inches it's feelers onto you and pulls you in without you even realizing it. You somehow find yourself playing just to see the next seen...

Weighs Heavy On The Heart And Mind 0

In 2004, Quantic Dream delivered a vision know as Indigo Prophecy. A spiritual successor to the point and click adventure games of the 80's Indigo Prophecy fell short of it's goals with a narrative that broke down in the third act. Now, Quantic Dream are back with a tangentially related game know as Heavy Rain. Following the interweaving story of four disparate yet connected characters on the hunt for the Origami Killer, Heavy Rain manages to be everything Indigo Prophecy wanted to be and then s...
