Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition is a 2D fighting game developed by Capcom and released for arcades (running CPS-2 hardware) in Japan on December 22, 2003. It received an extremely-limited release in North America and mainland Asia on February 2, 2004.

The sixth official iteration of Street Fighter II (and the last to be released in arcades), Hyper Street Fighter II was made to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the Street Fighter franchise and builds upon Super Street Fighter II Turbo by allowing players to choose earlier playable versions of each fighter. Some minor changes are also added, such as the character selection music (reverted to the one used in Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers) and some background elements from the original installment.

The game was later ported to the PlayStation 2 on December 18, 2003 (in Japan) and May 28, 2004 (in Europe), adding the option to choose from three separate soundtracks (normal CPS-2, earlier CPS-1, and an arranged soundtrack used in some ports of Super Street Fighter II and Super Street Fighter II Turbo). It also included the 1994 animated film Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie as a bonus. The Japanese version of this port was also released in a collector's edition with bonus additions (including a video DVD showcasing the X-Mania tournament).

The PS2 version was later bundled with Street Fighter III: Third Strike in Korea (on July 22, 2004) and North America (on August 31, 2004) as Street Fighter Anniversary Collection. This bundle was later ported to the Xbox in Japan (on October 28, 2004), Europe (on October 29, 2004), and North America (on February 22, 2005), adding online multiplayer support via Xbox Live.

The original version was later digitally re-released for arcades in October 9, 2014 via the NESiCAxLive platform for the PC-based Taito Type X² system. Released exclusively in Japan, this system allowed players to keep track of their Versus Mode stats via a special card and included online leaderboards.

    Characters

All 17 fighters from the previous installment return. However, most characters now have up to five separate "modes" of play, each based on their previous incarnations (SuperT/SuperX, Super, Turbo, Champ/Dash, and Normal). All computer-controlled opponents play in the SuperT/SuperX mode.

In addition, players can choose a hidden version (dubbed "Super Turbo Old") of each character with a simple cheat code. This mode is based on the secret SSF2 mode in SSF2T and has only minor differences with the Super mode.

Players cannot play mirror matches when either player is using a Normal mode character.
