Kinect is a camera and depth sensor-based peripheral for the Xbox 360 that allows users to interact with and play games using their whole bodies, rather than using a standard controller.

As noted earlier yesterday, Microsoft has remained mum on pricing details for its hands-free controller, Kinect, despite its recent E3 re-unveil. Retailers, on the other hand, haven't shared in the silence, almost universally pegging the device for pre-order at $149. Some shops have even spitballed bundle prices well in advance of Microsoft's official word. But here's an interesting, and possibly meaningful, weave in the ongoing "What will Kinect cost?" tapestry: Microsoft's own store has listed the device at $149, and interestingly, will allow pre-orders starting on November 4, 2010.

     This, I do for you.
     This, I do for you.

As Joystiq notes, this shouldn't necessarily be taken as a confirmation of price. It's definitely possible that one of the behemoth heads on the Microsoft hydra isn't talking to the other. But I'm going to guess that the shared body does indeed house details we're not privy to just yet, and just maybe this was an accidental listing in advance of an impending announcement. We'll see, eh?

Alright, it's confirmed.  It can no longer be a rumor at this point.  Kinect will launch at 149 USD.

Unless something goes crazy and it ends up launching for the other rumored 99 USD price tag.  That won't happen, though.

It also mentions wi-fi, which may mean that the Kinect doesn't need to be plugged in directly, which would be nice.

What?  Wi-fi is associated with the internet; that has nothing to do with the Xbox 360/Kinect connectivity.  Like the New Xbox 360 demonstrates, there's an actual port for Kinect on there.  You'll still have to plug it directly to the console.

$150 is a price that a hard core player might be willing to pay but because of the nature of the device and the direction that Microsoft is taking it with the software I don't believe that kinect will be a popular device among hard core players and at this price point I think it is too high to appeal to casual market that has embraced the wii

Perhaps I misinterpreted then, but why would the Kinect need a "  Wi-Fi extension cable" bundled in the box?

Seems priced to stay on the shelves, I mean for $50 more you can buy an entire motion control system in the Wii.  Not that that would be for the better, I def think I'll wait for some better apps for it before a purchase.

Hmm after hearing about Dance Central i was pretty stoked about Kinect but this dampens my enthusiasm a bit. If it's bundled with some games then thats not bad but for just the unit that's a bit steep.
If some smart devs come up with some cool stuff then i'll still probably pick it up but this went from being a first month purchase to a wait an see.
    Cmon MS. Come ON.

Perhaps Kinect needs a Wi-fi connection for the peer-to-peer video chat... but that makes no sense as it'd be connected to the 360.  My guess is that the cable's actually for the 360 itself, just like the normal cables that usually come with it.

IF they can get Kinect working while a player is sitting down, and IF they announce some real games that will have minor, optional Kinect advancements, and IF Kinect drops to $120 or less within the next few years, THEN I'll seriously consider getting it.

@FluxWaveZ: Wi-Fi is about Internet AND device connectivity.  For example, my home wireless network works perfectly well when my internet is out.  I can print from any computer in my house, as well as perform many other tasks, except those that are internet related.

It COULD be that the Kinect uses Wi-Fi for some functionality.  Frankly I have no idea.

My point is only that Wi-Fi serves for more than internet access.

You know  iv'e been seeing the kinnect for 149.00 pre-order for a few days at least at amazon. It seemed right after E3 that I was seeing this, but didn't log when. kinnect doesn't appeal to me really so it's not like I paid heavy attention to it. I do suppose theres an easy way of finding out when Amazon first posted it's pre-order Kinnect page. and at what price if any,  and yes I see now Nov 4.

This may be news but my impression is that this isn't anything new, in a way. In the price?

I remember that guy at E3 with the fake smile and like one of the big exec's saying that we'll be very pleased with the price.

I'm not so pleased. It costs more than the Arcade Xbox 360.
And combine that with the shitty lineup that will cost 60 bucks per title in those horrible purple boxes.

Move may be a little more money if you want 4 Move controllers (it only supports 4) and the Eye but at least the line up is good and the stuff like Sports Champions is 40 bucks.

If all is true, then MS is taking a hit on the hardware to get it into as many homes as possible. According to this Kotaku piece, the hardware costs $150 to manufacture, and didn't I read somewhere that the MS published games would only be $40?

I figure since Sony already announced their price, MS is probably about to drop theirs soon to. With the $99 Bundle + $29.99 Navigator Control, Move comes in at about $130. So at $20 dollars more, I could see MS feeling OK there.

But isn't the wireless technology between devices something other than Wi-Fi?  Something like infrared sensors or Blu-ray technology?  I've always thought Wi-Fi itself was exclusively associated with the wireless connectivity to the internet.

No, those are only 1st party Sony Move games.  MS Kinect games will be priced at the same 59.99 USD.

The Wii also has hundreds upon hundreds of titles.  We only know, like, 7 Kinect titles so far.  Give it time, just like how the Wii had some pretty bad games upon its release.

@FluxWaveZ: Wi-Fi is just the device's way to connect to the Local network.  From there, the network can or can't be connected to the internet.  Obviously most are but there are a lot of places that aren't.

You may be confused due to a lot of places selling just wireless routers.  Which take the internet signal and broadcast it for anyone that has the password to pick up.  But a Wi-Fi enabled device just gives it the ability to connect to a wireless network or signal.  Whether it be internet enabled or not.  Unless something is 3g, your router is almost always connected through a wire.

But we don't really care solely about the tech being packaged, in this case; we care about its actual relevance for games.  From what we're seeing now, the only reason anyone would want to buy the device is for Child of Eden, Dance Central and, possibly, Your Shape.  Yelling at your Xbox for it to turn off or using the poor, motion controlled menu navigation that they've demonstrated isn't all that exciting.

Yeah maybe $99, but to me $150 is a bit too much. Even if I see something I must play, I am still looking at a $210 to play that game.
