Liara is one of the many allies that accompany you throughout Mass Effect. She is also a potential love interest for Shepherd. She is the daughter of Matriarch Benezia, and is of the Asari race. She has an excellent domain of Biotics.

Overview

Liara T'Soni is an Asari, an Adept, a Prothean Expert, and one of two romantic options for Sheppard may choose from. If Liara is present on a mission and Prothean Tech or Artifacts are nearby you can be reasonably sure she'll have something to say about the culture or an educated guess on what its purpose could be.

She was born in 2077, 106 years before the game starts, and is the Daughter of Matriarch Benezia and an unknown Asari who little is revealed. All that is said is that her 'Father' is another Asari, and while that is very possible physically it is a Taboo for two Asari to create a child when so many other races could improve the gene pool. To protect her other parent from the social stigma Liara never is told about who else had a hand in her birth. In this way she is given the label of 'Pureblood' which to Asari is a grave racial slur.

She spends those years with a distant relation to her powerful Mother, later finding a love of solitude and picking about in old ruins.

When she takes an expedition to Therum in the Artemis Tau cluster the Geth give her more trouble than she can handle. She has dealt with danger before, namely raiders, but these Geth are in a different league and plan to capture her or kill her outright. She hides and awaits for rescue... Which comes by way of Commander Sheppard.

The Commander goes in search of her because of her link to Saren's Strong Right Hand, Matriarch Benezia, and after it's apparent she is innocent of Saren's influence (and her skills and knowledge is very useful to the present crisis) she can be offered a position as a member of the Normandy crew.

Her infatuation with Sheppard occurs regardless of his or her gender. As she spends a great deal of time alone she is fairly awkward when dealing with other people, stumbling over herself at times and apologizing for unintended remarks. Gradually she finds Sheppard more interesting than just a specimen who has been influenced by Protean Tech. She looks at his personal records and if the Commander also wishes it, will pursue a relationship.

She occasionally will say things like 'By the Goddess'. It implies she is a follower of the Monotheistic belief of the Goddess Athame who, like all Asari, cycle through Maiden, Matron, and Matriarch Stages. The difference being that the Goddess repeats the cycle endlessly and mortal Asari do it only once. This goes against more popular religion they hold known as ‘Siari’ which is roughly a based on reincarnation.
